I wonder if he got in Ross's ear...though I can't imagine him pushing for Philbin that hard.

During the Alumni Weekend many former players where supportive in keeping Philbin and building continuity among the franchise. I can only assume that Marino shared similar sentiments.

Daytona Fin posted the interviews from last Thursday in a link:

Sounds like a lot of Dolphins alumni think Philbin should stay. There's a few interviews on the subject in this link (1 on1's on th right).

If put on the spot, I doubt many ex players including Marino will bad mouth Philbin. But in private it may be different. Since Dan is in an official capacity now, I'm sure he spoke his mind to Ross on the matter (If he was asked), and at that we may never know what was said.

There's something to continuity. I'm usually on that bandwagon, but there just seems to be something missing with Philbin as a HC. But after saying that if this move was designed to keep someone like Lazor with this franchise I'm all for it.

That could work the other way as well. Privately, they could support Philbin..........but your right, we will likely never know his thoughts on this.

I doubt Ross would make that decision without talking to Marino at length. With such an early, emphatic vote of confidence I have to think Dan is on board with it.

I am positive that Marino did lobby for continuity. He has seen growth in Tannehill, and I expect he believes a coaching change would bring an offensive system change. The franchise needs Tannehill to have some consistency with his coordinator and offensive system.

At the very least, I don't think he adamantly wanted to get rid of him. At some point, you have to trust the judgement of people that have a first hand perspective. If the people closest to the team think he deserves another year, I won't complain. Although, I think he's had enough time and would be willing to look for an improvement. Hopefully, I'm wrong and they can become much more consistent next year.

We have a $17 million per year option to exercise on Tannehill in about 3 months, and we have to make a decision on that. I think Marino was at practices to evaluate Tannehill, not Philbin. Also, Marino is on record a few times as saying that Ross has never asked him to evaluate Philbin.

I think the whole thing came down to wanting to keep Tannehill in the same system. I am sure Marino and Shula are still close and talk frequently, and Shula has publicly expressed his support of Philbin. That could of played a factor in the decision by Ross as well.

I wish Shula could mentor Philbin on how to coach, like Marino is mentoring Tannehill on how to be a better QB.

If so, he's off to a terrible start trying to keep up with John Elway.

Keeping Tannehill in the same system hoping he continues to grow IMO 2 as the biggest reason for keeping Philbin
