Was Philbin Ireland's first choice?

I have heard reports in the past that Ireland actually wanted McCoy and Ross wanted Philbin.

Is there anyone who can shed more light on this for me?

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that word around the league is that Stephen Ross wants to hire Joe Philbin while Jeff Ireland wants to hire Mike McCoy. It will be interesting to see who wins this battle and if Ireland gets his way then we really know he is here for the long haul and Ross has total belief in him.

And he was even more confident after flying to New York for a Thursday interview because that went a full eight hours -- nine hours if you count the meal -- and afterward general manager Jeff Ireland told McCoy that if things went as expected, the team would send a plane for McCoy and the family to bring them from Denver back to South Florida on Friday.

Thanks for the update. Maybe Ireland isn't the one who should be shown the door? If he gets his way, hires McCoy, and we go 9-7, 10-6 and make the playoffs, then we're not having this discussion.

He may have wanted a different coach but it does not absolve him of all his bad personnel moves.

Yes, but Philbin won't coach Brandon Marshall or Vontae Davis, so he has to trade them both, and it sounds like Philbin was the one who wanted Dansby and Burnett jettisoned.

I think Philbin is very insecure as a coach, hence getting rid of all the leaders on the team from a year ago (Long, Dansby, Bush). Like I heard someone say earlier this week, if the coaching staff had come to Ireland and told them they needed Bush, Long, etc. to stick around, Ireland would have found a way to make it happen.

I don't like Philbin, or his "system", and believe that he was a poor choice for Head Coach. I wish that Ross would have just cleaned house, but he's the one who chose Philbin.

Philbin will be a good coach for the Fins, in my opinion. Glad hes staying on board as the HC. Only time will tell though.. we'll see

Ireland's biggest mistake was not pounding the table for McCoy. He would still be employed and maybe in the playoffs.

I am not sure. I want the Pats to not go to the Super Bowl. If they beat Indy, Denver has a better shot at home.

Honestly, I enjoy the banter on this site. I value Hayden's input, while I do not agree with him all the time. Relax......................
