This has nothing to do with his play this year.

But how can you legitimately think that signing a DT to a $100+ million contract would automatically fix the defense?

I feel like Tannebaum/Hickey thought that Suh would fix the glaring holes at LB and DB, but it obviously hasn't.

It also hasn't really fixed Miami's inability to stop the run.

But with 100 million, you could have put money towards several different positions, and even damn good players. Miami could have signed several very good players using $100 million.

Instead, we're stuck with an all star on the defensive line and have huge liabilities at offensive guard, linebacker and in the secondary.

I think so. We needed OL, MLB, CB. And could have gotten a cheaper DT

They had the chance to get the best DT in the NFL and got him. I'm okay with that. The holes at LB, CB, and G, how much of that is Suh's signing's fault? You'd think they'd be able to fill those holes with better players than they had.

Signing Suh wasn't a mistake, but it was a mistake to think he was cure for all of Miami's defensive issues. Even with Jones having a good season, Miami's secondary and linebackers are well below most starting units. You could replace most of these two units with mid or lower level free agents and late round draft picks and not have a much of a drop off.

I agree. Outside of Grimes(who has regressed) and Jones, the secondary is terrible. Same goes for the linebacking corps. You have Jenkins, who looks good, but then the rest of the players are below average. I hope to see this offseason partially geared towards the back seven of the defense.

Signing him was not a mistake....Giving him as much money as they did, is a mistake, not using him right, is a mistake, not getting more quality players in the draft to help him was a mistake, but signing was far from a mistake.

No. Realistically the team could not win a super bowl this year so there is time to build a great team. Fans don't want to accept that fact but lets be real Joe Philbin will not win you a super bowl. He was our coach. Championship and playoff expectations get thrown out the window under his leadership. The o line needs to be fixed and we need to seriously address the secondary. Suh is a great piece for the future.

EVERYBODY knew that o line was bad entering the season. On paper they were bad, on the field they were bad. No depth....It was hardly addressed in the off season yet so many people are surprised and upset they're still bad. That is the #1 weakness on the team. Its not the lbers, the secondary or coaching. We can't give one of our best players time to make plays. That is a major flaw.

Signing Suh raised the expectations of everyone in the organization and all the fans and all the media.

I think one of their biggest problems, which has been a problem for years, it is not new.

Is that they don't really have very good quality control coaches.

They are not able to effectively SELF SCOUT their own squad.

They can't effectively gauge the talent level of their players versus other players on opposing teams.

I'm not worried about the money spent on him.

My concern is more about the level of expectations that will follow WHOEVER gets hired to be the next head Coach.

We are now indisputably the weakest team in the AFC East, and the ALL the other teams got better and appear to be getting better still.

We still don't even have LBers that can tackle consistently or a QB that converts 3rd downs with any regularity.

It seems that everyone has completely forgotten that Tony Sparano was run out of town because he wanted to focus on running the ball and playing defense.

The local media had hammered to death the idea that we should be a
PASSING TEAM NOW.

There's no doubt we have serious personnel issues on the defensive side of the ball, but IMO the biggest mistake this offseason came from Philbin when he refused to fire Kevin Coyle. That and as many others have mentioned, thinking Suh would immediately fix our defense.

A mistake to sign the centerpiece of the D?!?

Hell no. He's what we build around in the draft.

Sparano was the opposite of Philbin. You cant only run or only pass and you then have to play defense.

These guys around Suh are greatly paid NFL pro's. They're not supposed to suck. Unfortunately the surrounding cast he has does suck. Not all, but most!

I'm on the fence, my gut says we could have spent elsewhere as his talents weren't realized. Near the bottom of the league in stopping the run so his salary was wasted imo. Flip is that he'll prove his worth down the line and interior line is solid for a few more years.

If they had a legit quarterback people would not be asking this but because the team is struggling people are second guessing our prized free agent
