Was the Tuna in FULL control while he was here???

This is it right here for me.
Ireland was in control of the draft with Parcells as the final say. So alot of time was spent on debating between players IMO. With Philbin its a collaborative thing where Philbin lets him have final say but Philbin will speak his mind and Ireland works his best to get it for him. I think Ireland has shown Philbin just how much he knows so he leaves him to his expertise. Give and take.

yep, the only free agents will be rookies or rookies cut.

It's about the type player the offensive scheme required. There's no point drafting small speedy guys for an offensive system like Sprano and the Tuna ran.

To me the system we are running now is the system Ireland prefers because he hired Philbin.

I can honestly say I've never heard the "original plan" consulting group story. Care to post a link. It sounds like a good read.

I don't have one. It was talked about here in Texas though (sports radio). I think some thought his Dolphins work (at the time) as a move between coaching/consulting. Even though he was a "consultant" of sorts in Miami it was talked about he wanted to do more a freelance type thing.

Of course he was in full control.

How are you guys just figuring this out? This is who Bill Parcells is, has been and always will be.

And this is why I never jumped on the "Fire Ireland" bandwagon.

People just needed a finger to point somewhere. They don't car where they point they just need to blame someone.

Ireland was a pawn. A puppet. A gopher. It's hard for me to believe that he did anything other that fetch Tuna's coffee and wipe his fat ass for him.

Ireland knows more than a lot of have given him credit for.

Jeff Ireland is a creep. That's why I want him gone. This is still an entertainment first business, and threatening year round. The odds of winning a title are so low I'd like a classy charismatic person in charge, providing updates or wisecracks when appropriate.

Bobby Beathard was a joy to listen to, with the boyish charm. Long after his Dolphin years, when he was with the Redskins, I saw him at Howard Jones Memorial Field when I was a student at USC and walked out to greet him, sensing an opportunity for a column in the Daily Trojan. Beathard talked to me openly for an hour while we watched the USC practice, providing great quotes and plenty of off-the-record stuff regarding the Dolphins -- "They don't get any push on that side." When Roy Firestone tried to barge in and interrupt as if I wasn't there, Beathard politely told him to wait a half hour, that he was already occupied with an interview. I particularly enjoyed our exchange when Firestone wobbled away. Beathard: "What's his first name, anyway? Me: "Roy." Beathard: "Good, that's what I called him."

Can you imagine anything like that from charming Jeff Ireland? I don't mind arrogance from someone who has earned it. Ireland soils the fan experience, and forges a reputation as a jerk, with no accomplishments as a backdrop.

More than anything, I don't respect sports execs who scorn the media and don't understand how to use it for benefit. It's like Shannon as opposed to Golden.

Besides, Ireland has made numerous blunders, all by his lonesome. There's no hint of special ability. He signed Columbo and tried to hitch this franchise to Kyle Orton for $9 million.

I'm not going to overreact to one apparently successful draft any more than I pay too much attention to last week's result. That's bar stool gullible.

This will always be a debate especially by those who do not like Ireland who want to blame him for years of bringing in bad players either thru the draft or FA but NO player was ever signed in Miami without the nod from BP. This is Irelands second draft in full control and his first with Philbin and his staff and yesterday was a clear example that Ireland knows how to draft and get the players his staff can coach.

Yo, time to update your sig pic.... no more B marsh

We can hope so and that from here on out he drafts very well for us. Next year we without a doubt will go WR and DB heavy

So you want our GM to be a classy guy in a dirt bag industry?

Personally I don't care if he eats children for lunch. Bring a title.

Jeff didn't ignore me at bokampers in 2008. he was eating dinner with the family me, fin-atic, and d-day, 3 clearly not sober guys took the time to hollar out to him, and he was polite enough to actually wave back and smile.

I had a feeling this subject was going to come up.

I think its safer to say that the cards fell right for Ireland, not that hes some genius personel wizard(especially since we are paying a backup corner $5 mil a year while Wake holds out).

Our method of drafting is completely backwards from some of the more successful teams in the league. We draft for need but temper it with our board. On the completely other side of the spectrum, the Lions draft for talent...period. Other teams fall somewhere in the middle, such as the Ravens who seem to draft completely on talent but will choose the player with higher positional value if the players have the similar rankings on their board.
This was an excellent draft. But alot of those excellent players fell to us for various reasons. Tannehill is raw. If he had more experience there is no way he would have fallen to 8. Many offensive lineman fell in this draft(Reiff to the Lions, DeCastro to the Steelers?!?!) and Martin has some strength issues. Vernon was suspended or he might very well of been a second round pick. Miller has injury concerns.
Now, its to Irelands credit that he pulled the trigger. Other then the Martin pick, Ireland was damn near uncharacteristic in this draft. With his job on the line he did what he was suppose to do: got players with huge upside. Unprecedented in Miami. Thats what a GM is suppose to do, what is best for his team and not necessarily whats best for his job security.

For those enjoying the arm afterglow of a vigorous night with the Miami Dolphins draft and our GM, i do apologize for what i have to say next. Those suggesting that Parcells was holding Ireland back, let me remind you of a fact: it wasn't Parcells who brought and signed Marc Colombo.

You can thank Sparano for Colombo. The reason I say that is because even when everyone on the planet could see that Colombo was the worst Dolphin starter in their history, Sparano would not replace him with any of the young kids he had on the roster.

how many games early on was jake missing. That was a big reason the fins went 0-7. those young kids had a chance and we all saw how that went.

Colombo was totally Sporano. And for Orton. I don't recall seeing him wearing a Dolphins uniform ever.
