Now I haven't done the research on it, but it doesn't look like Saban is/has gotten rid of a bunch of Wanny acquisitions. Maybe Wanny did know something about talent. Kazoo aside, that is. (Fiedler)

Considering a vast majority of the roster is Wanny acquisitions, it's kinda hard to do. We'd probably have to get rid of like 40something players if we were to completely free ourselves from the Wanny regime/comedy of errors.

Naturally, I wouldn't expect THAT kind of butchering, but it has been minimal, don't you think?

I never thought talent was the issue. The offensive line has been a joke, but that has been bolstered through coaching and chemistry (they did look a helluva lot better with each passing week). At any rate, I think the team we have now is a pretty respectable team. Probably not a playoff team, but a pretty respectable one.

Upgrading through FA cost money... we will do most of our upgrading through the draft and through developing players within the system. In a few years all or most of wannys guys will be gone.

If Wanny was right why was this team such a wreck last year ?

Was it the players or was it wanny and his hand picked staff ?

I think you should wait till the Turk visits near the end of pre-season before you start making head counts of who Saban has kept............the only moves he has had to make so far are salary cap moves, come August he will have to reduce his roster down to the mandated size.

I never questioned that Wanny wasn't a good defensive coach. He was weak in talent evaluation and had a tendency to draft players that did not fit into his team. He was a terrible GM and (probably since he was the coach), did not look into the future of the team, only the present. His greatest downfall as a coach was his inablility or stubborness to alter his plan/scheme/players when it was obvious that what was happening wasn't working. He also was extremely poor in in-game adjustments. Besides, Saban is kind of strapped as to who he can get rid of and who he can't due to the cap...He obviously has chosen to reload and adjust instead of rebuilding...

From the standpoint that our team has regressed similarly to how Chicago did under Wanny's leadership, that would be no; however, from the standpoint that he resigned, that would be yes. Now, Wayne propably has the standpoint of wishing he never met Wanny in the first place, hence the massive outlay of cash to bring in Saban. From Saban's standpoint this was a good thing since he probably will retire with the load of cash he will receive from Wayne. So from the standpoint that Wanny never did anything right, you would have to consider Saban's standpoint that its a good thing because he is reaping the benifits! :D

Steve (I think I'm getting dizzy :))

Really, it's hard to judge at this point. I logically guess the real bloodletting of this team will happened next year. After Saban gets through his first NFL season (as HC), only then can a coach accurately judge whether or not a player "fits" his system.

I won't be surprised to see major departures next year, it's all part of pro sports.

SABAN DOES NOT HAVE TO REDUCE THE ROSTER UNTIL PRE-SEASON, THEREFORE THIS THREAD IS PREMATURE.

Wanny did 4 things to improve the roster he was given by Jimmy Johnson. He drafted Chris Chambers, Randy McMichael, signed Ogun and traded for Ricky Williams. Considering Madison, Taylor, Thomas and a vast majority of the Defensive foundation was drafted by Jimmy (and Timbo by Shula), Wanny did LITTLE to improve this team.
In order to improve a team after 5 years of coaching, your draft picks ultimiately must pan out. As you can see, he only actually added 2 starters via his drafts. That's a very poor track record.
Wanny has never been able to accumulate talent based on his own judgement. He was merely someone to hold the fort down after Jimmy left. Nearly any legitimate coaching prospect in the NFL could have managed the same results given the stellar defense Wanny was giftwrapped.
Jimmy gave us a 5 year window to be competitive for a Super Bowl. Wanny's inability to improve on his mentor's foundation is a shining example of giving the incompetent every opportunity to succeed only to listen to excuses.
The only thing Wanny was right about in his entire tenure was quitting. It WAS the right thing to do.
