Pro Football Weekly Says:
Now that veteran WR Troy Brown has re-upped for a 15th season with the Patriots, we hear that free-agent acquisition Kelley Washington, 2006 team receiving leader Reche Caldwell and last season’s playoff standout Jabar Gaffney are battling for one or two roster spots, depending on whether the team elects to carry five or six receivers. And that doesn’t even count 2006 second-round pick Chad Jackson, who is almost assured of going on the physically-unable-to-perform list to start the season following knee surgery. We hear it was clear that, of all the receivers in minicamp, Caldwell and Gaffney had the best handle on the team’s offense. Word is, Washington struggled to catch the ball and appeared to have more drop issues than any other receiver in minicamp. If he struggles in training camp, the team won’t hesitate to cut him, leaving him as the most recent failed attempt to find a big receiver, following past cuts Donald Hayes and David Terrell, among others.
