I thought I heard a while back that the Vikings were eventually going to release Culpepper. Not sure if I am remembering correctly. Someone help me out, please.

Yeah if he didnt get trade but if we would have waited he could have been more expensive and other team would have been fighting for him to.

Well, I think he wanted to come here so bad that it would have taken alot for another team to compete with us if he were a free agent, however, with the Vikings Cap situation, it wasn't a given that they were going to get rid of him. They had enough $$ that they could have kept him. Therefore, it took the Dolphins offering the Vikings something in order to get them to want to ship him off. Not that I think they wanted him, but, they had the leverage having him under contract and being able to afford to keep him..

Incorrect. Their owner was going to pay the bonus no matter what. No matter the size of the beef you don't let an all pro QB get away 'that' easily.

edit: LMAO I spelled beef as beer.

yup, you are right. if no one was willing to trade for him, the vikings would have been FINE to keep him under contract...you forget they dont have much of a qb right now.

He had a 6mil roster bonus that was due on March 17th... there was debate of whether they would cut him before paying it... but nothing was certain.

I really doubt they would cut Daunte for no compensation though...

Plus, that would have been terrible. We would have gotten out bid by other teams if he hit FA... Particularly the Cards... Teams wernt worried about paying him. The thing that allowed us to get him, is that we were willing to give up a pick...

Not sure if he was going to be released, but if he was we would have had to compete with other clubs to sign him. Even if the fins were his first choice and he really really wanted to be here, there was no guarantee he would sign here. remember Brees?

If we don't trade for Culpepper and ended up losing out on Brees, we would've been in the same situation as we were with Brees except with no backup plan.
