And if so. Why was Cassel allowed to come back in if Flutie played. Doesn't the third string QB have to stay in the game if he comes in at QB?

Very astute observation. You are completely right. Once Flutie entered the game neither the 1st or 2nd string QBs are allowed to return. The refs missed that one.

I believe it would mean Brady could not come back in since he was the number 1.

Correct me if I am mistaken, but Flutie came in to kick an extra point. Not to play QB. Therefore is has no bearing if he is the 3rd QB.

wasn't it the fourth quarter? The 1st and second string QB's are not allowed back in UNTIL the fourth quarter of the game.

He did play QB, because he received the ball from center. What he did after that is moot.

That might be the case. But, I was listening on the internet and it sounded like he lined up in the shotgun as a QB.

thats what i thought too...but its against the world champion(cant do no wrong) patriots

He has zero stats as a QB so I am assuming he must have came in one play and handed it off. Which is something I didn't see during the game. As for coming in at the dropkick, that is an XP and was in the punt formation. I do not believe that is considered QB, but rather P or K.

If he was the third QB then he was, technically, inactive, and by him entering the field in any capacity he becomes active. However, I know the rules in the 4th quarter are different and I'm not real positive if it was legal or not.

Flutie was never "QB". He just kicked.

It was the 4th QTR. So even Brady could have came back into the game. Flutie didn't even play QB.

O.K. thanks for the info. I was not sure about this rule. I kind of forgot about the fourth quarter part. I was really wondering if New England was getting away with one agian or not. That is why I had to write.

I thought the rule was if an inactive QB comes in only the 1st stringer cannot play. I think 2nd stringer still can. And also that rule doesnt matter if he was listed as active and not as emergency QB. 3rd stringer usually is listed as inactive but its not always the case, as i think it was this time.
