Everyone keeps saying NT is a huge need and we need to get younger on the dline. Well, it looks like we will have two very young starters on our line this season. I believe Rodrique Wright will step in as our Nose Tackle this season. He was supposed to be a first or second round pick before his stock dropped based on his injury and need for surgery. He took the year off and now his shoulder is fully healed.

He looks to get back on the field and show the talent he showed in college and dont be surprised if he fills in as a very solid tackle.

The Dolphins didn't have another pick until round seven, where they had three selections and got some pretty good value. With their first two choices Miami addressed the defensive line by bringing in tackles Fred Evans of Texas St. and Rodrique Wright of Texas. Evans is a good athlete and interesting sleeper to develop but the real story was Wright, who went much lower than anyone expected. As recently as last summer it looked like Wright could be a future Top 5-10 overall pick but his career was derailed by both injuries and inconsistent play. The reason Wright fell as far as he did was a shoulder injury but if he can get healthy the potential is there for him to be a major steal because based on just talent he was definitely a Day One prospect.

He is a very talented dt and will free up our linebackers to reak havoc on opposing quarterbacks!

Wright isn't a nose tackle

Rod Wright may become a good DE in the 3-4 of DT in the 3-4, but a nose tackle he is not. Ck said this in a previous post and he basicly sapped all of my feelings about Rod Wright out of my mind in it it seems haha. Fred Evans is our young hopeful for NT and possibly Manny, if he grows up.

This is a quote from CK about wright:
Rod Wright is not a nose tackle. Please do not include him among your thoughts at the position. He's either a face-up defensive end (4-technique, or "Closed End" as it has been called), or a 3-technique defensive tackle...both of which are positions in our defense. I would also caution against thinking too highly of him. The Dolphins did not "trick" anyone by taking him in the 7th round. If his shoulder was the entire reason for his fall, someone would have taken him much higher than that. The truth is there may be irreparable damage to the shoulder already from playing with a torn rotator cuff for so long, and additionally he had a nasty reputation at Texas for being lazy. He had some rather unflattering nicknames among his teammates that were given to him because of his poor work habits. It would be well to remember that it has been a full three years since the last time he looked like fantastid DT prospect. Some people are saying that Daunte Culpepper is finished just because it's been two years since he looked like a fantastic pro bowl caliber QB.

Thats one mans opinion. If you consider the Dolphins don't use a pure 3-4 defense....his opinion is off the mark.

Exactly, Rod Wright is going to backup Matt Roth and Vonnie Holiday at both DE spots.

From the looks of it........

CK's post was STRICTLY about the NT position in the 3-4 scheme.

It had nothing to do with Wright's future in the 4-3.

I'm thinking Manny Wright in middle and flanked by Rodrique and Vonnie on the ends in the 3-4 sets. When we go with 4 down it should be JT/VH/RW or MW/Matt Roth.

Why talk about a 3-4....when the Dolphins don't use a 3-4.

i know they dont use a pure 3-4 defense

then what are you getting at? that the run a hybrid 4-3/3-4, yes that is true but the center most position on the defensive line will most likely not be rod wright. He is much more a vonnie holliday type of player than a casey hampton or keith traylor. I have high hopes for rod but not as our nose tackle. He is much more of a pass rusher than he is a run stuffer and with his athletic "potential" why would we tie him up in a position with which he only takes on and ties up blockers and once in a great while gets a chance at the QB or running back? Hes much more suited further to the outside where he can showcase his skill set much better.

Did you watch the Dolphins at all last year?

Capers mixed it up, as they will do again. Why don't you think Briggs was ever a fit?

To expect anything from Manny Wright at this point is sheer lunacy. I'm sure Mueller has a plan, which may include re-signing Traylor for one last go round.

i had no idea the poster was speaking over an over the center position in the 4-3 i guess, haha. Typicly nose tackles are tied in with a 3-4, but i guess they are also seen in 4-3 with switching to power sides and such, im just really trying to get at that rod wright doesnt seem suited to be a mountainous man in the middle that ties up blockers and frees up linebackers. He just seems more like a quick, pass rushing DT with flexibility in his size for a 3-4 defensive end.

Rodrique Wright will be a good 4-3 DT and 3-4 DE. But not a NT. Way too light to play a NT.

What I'm getting at is this.....the Dolphins don't have a NT they have DT's and DE's....Wright played the DT position while at Texas....they use a pro-style defense. While you wouldn't expect him or anyone like him to play against the center and guard....he's more than able to play against most guards in the NFL.
