Missed this home game and it was the first game I haven't seen live in like 4 or 5 years. Knowing the score already and following the game on NFL.com Mobile app I had some expectations.
But what I saw I did not expect at all. It was a friggin slaughter. I can not recall a game in recent memory where the Dolphins played an almost perfect game. This was awful close. If there is anything to complain about it would only be that we have to take advantage of short fields and that we can not rely on Sturgis on anything 40 plus. But otherwise.....
I think the Marino hire pays off. For the first time I saw a shadow of franchise QB in Tannehill. He took a lot of risks he didn't take in previous games. I think one of the problems with Tannehill is and was Zach Taylor. He is just not a good QB coach. And while the relationship with Moore is a good one and Moore is Tannehill's eyes on the sideline Tannehill needs someone to coach him to step above being a Nebraska Cornhusker outcast. I think Marino instills the confidence Tannehill needs to take more risks. I think when those two look at film or pictures and Marino says "See that guy. Open. Use your arm and put the afterburners on the football".
I know, I know. I don't know what the working relationship between the two is but I am sure that Marino pointed Tannehill in that direction at times.
That rocket between the two defenders to (I believe it was) Wallace? A thing of beauty.
Landry? Oh my, we will have a lot of fun with this guy. What a steal in the draft. He gets better every week (I am drooling over that tip-toe TD) and soon he will break a return. I think it is a long time for me that I was actually excited about a return game.
There are always naysayers who will point out that the Chargers were on a two game losing streak, had to travel east etc. Bottom line is that the Chargers are a good team with a darn good QB and lots of talent on both sides of the field. Last year we would have won that game maybe 20-17 or 15-13. Oh I forgot. We did: 20-16.
But this was total domination on defense and offense without letting up. From the kickoff to the end of the third quarter when we put backups in.
Which brings me to those who want our starters in the game to score 40 points. Let Lamar Miller be the lesson. Scoring another 3 points or TD is not worth the risk to have additional, unjustified and unnecessary injuries. I want our starters out as soon as we can be assured that a game is in the win collumn. It saves us headaches in the future and gives our backups valuable, quality playing time.
Now on to Detroit.
A very good team but not unbeatable. And the debbie-downers who always say we only beat x-amount of teams with winning records: I believe Detroit also only beat 2 teams with current winning records. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. :hump:
Lions and the Dolphins are probably more similar than anything. Both have top ranked Ds and (still) middle of the pack offenses. As a matter of fact we score more points than Detroit.
Our 'weakness' is offense. Not so much of what we are capable of or not but rather consistency. We have to play 60 minutes. Against teams like JXV we might get away with only 30 minutes of football on offense but against good teams like Detroit or GB we have to play 60 minutes - just like we did against the Chargers.
The Dolphins have a grand opportunity on Sunday. With a win they are setting themselves up for a grand showdown with Bills (either at 6-3 or 5-4) on Thursday night in front of a national audience. And knowing our fan base night time games have more of a football college atmosphere.
What a football setup next week in south Florida: if the Dolphins win it is Thursday Night Dolphins at 6-3 vs Bills (possibly 6-3) and two days later Canes vs #2 Noles.
