After watching the Browns-Ravens game I thought of something some of us talked about in the offseason. Shaun Rogers.

As I was watching the game I watched him give very good pressure up the middle and playing with great energy and drive, even blocking an extra point. Now I think most people would agree we need to get more pressure up the middle. Watching Cam Wake force the QB to step up in to the pocket, it just seems to me a Shaun Rogers type NT would help this pass rush immensely and he is a huge man.

He is a great athlete and at 6'4 and 350 pounds and still a pretty young age of 30. He is fast for his size and was using moves most 350 pound NT's would not even attempt.

The Browns appear that they will be cleaning house and rebuilding, this offseason may be a good time to make a move.

So would it be worth trading for Rogers? Im sure he gets paid pretty good, can we afford to pay him without killing our salary cap? and is it worth giving up picks/players or maybe a combo of the two for him?

To me a NT that could anchor this defense for the next 6 years is one of the missing pieces for the future. We could concentrate on MLB/S in the draft for the defensive side of the ball. (Note: Im in no way saying we should not attempt to build through the draft like some may come on and criticize me on, just wondering if this would be a possible option and if people think it would be a good idea.)

shaun rodgers is out of the equation IMO ... but what we should learn from this game, is the importance of a presence in the middle of your defence...

some of those guys, wilfork, rodgers, jenkins, ngata... they don't have a vast repertoire of pass rush moves ... but a simple and effective push will crush the pocket and give all sorts of headaches for quarterbacks. That's what we need right now... our pass rushers on the outside are slightly above average, but the inside pressure is really struggling (at the exception of randy starks who has been playing like a beast as of lately... )

i won't even talk about how a stud NT affects a run defence ...
1- i think everyone knows the benefits
probably because
2- our NTs are actually quite good at stuffing the run

Yeah I agree we have pretty good run stuffing NT's. I just started salivating at the thought of having Rogers give us that type of Pass rush up the middle haha.

Absolutely no reason to try to trade for Rogers given that Vince Wilfork and Aubrayo Franklin, 2 really good NTs that currently play in the 3-4, are going to be free agents at the end of the year. They are both going to command a ton of money, Wilfork more than Franklin, but I'd love to see either one of them in Miami. Having a great NT is huge for a 3-4 defense, and locking a guy up like that for 4-6 years would be huge in the off-season. My preference is Wilfork because he's been playing at a high level longer than Franklin and it would hurt the Pats.

Plan B if a NT isn't signed in free agency: look at drafting Terrance Cody out of Alabama in the middle of the first round. Of course, all of this assumes that Jason Ferguson doesn't come back after this year, but you can't count on him for many more years, and I don't think Soliai is good enough to be a full-time starter.

I am glad I am not the only one who suffered through this game, Jesus if they were showing this game at Gitmo I bet the terrorist are talking now!!!

Well the reason I was suggesting Rogers is he would probaly come much cheaper then Wilfork. Not sure about Franklin though.

Just if the Browns try to clear house we may be able to get Rogers for a "steal".

well with how good Mangina is at playing GM and the fact that he is hell bent on ridding Cleveland of any talent I am sure we could package together a 6th round pick and a water bottle. Seriously I would love to have Rodgers!

Yeah my thoughts exactly lol, I dont think a 6th would do it but maybe a 4th and a 3rd for 2011(good for a rebuild) with a player would do it.

Edit* - Not to mention Rogers wanted out of Cleveland in the offseason.

You are giving Mangina to much credit! He traded down to the Jets and picked up nothing compared to what teams gave up in years past to move up in the first round. Then He got a couple scrubs and second day picks for Edwards. Trust me a 6th and Ted Ginn might do it, suddenly the water bottle looks like a better deal!
