Anyone watch the Pitt-Balt game? For me it was a sobering reality check at how far we have to go in the coaching department. Both coaches were in attack mode the entire game. John Harbaugh is a great coach - perhaps on the BB level. This guy is everything Phailbin isn't. He has such a great feel for his team and knows what it takes to win big games. For me two sequences really stood out. Up by 8 in the 3rd, facing a 4th and 1 on his own 45 he decides to go for it to keep the ball away from Big Ben. 100 out of 100 times Philbin punts there. Harbaughs team responds and converts. Later in game they get a TO in Steeler territory and are up where basically a FG makes it a two TD game. Philbin and most middling coaches would have run three straight plays to chew a little clock and be content w a FG. Not Harbaugh. They call a beautifully designed and executed mis direction pass to the backup TE who takes it 20 yards or so to pay dirt. That's how you coach when (a) you are the underdog, (b) on the road, (c) in a big game like the playoffs and (d) you have balls instead of labia down there.
I know Harbaughs don't grow on trees but like I said, this was a sobering reminder of how far our coaching needs to go in order to know how to put our team in a chance to be successful. I can't believe we are going into next year in what looks like an instant replay of fist pumps last year.
