We are #2 in the NFL Fewest Points Allowed Since 1997

Those Games Giving Up 21+ Points are Postseason Killers!

Thats an overrated stat, our D always manages to give up the points when we most need them not to.

I have to agree with Stamos, though our average in points allowed per season is low, I have researched and found out that they have many games over the last 2 seasons alone (14 games), where they allowed at least 21 or more points in a game. This being one of the correlations to loosing the games against .500 and over teams through the last 4 years.

Using the teams at the start of this thread for reference and adding NE...

This is the short and sweet report otherwise continue through the stats over the last 4 years:

Phili had 15 games giving up an avg of 25.25 ppg (record 7-8)
Tampa had 17 games giving up an avg of 27 ppg (record 3-14)
Miami had 23 games giving up an avg of 27.7 ppg (record 9-14)
Balt had 24 games giving up an avg of 28 ppg (record 9-15)
NE had 27 games giving up an avg of 27.2 ppg (record 8-19)
Pits had 28 games giving up an avg of 27 ppg (record 8-20)

It looks IMO, that the seasons that these teams had 6 or less of those games giving up an average 27 points or less, they have a great chance to make the post season. Otherwise you better have a high power offense to compete.

The long version......

Miami has an avg ranked defense of # 5.25 in the last 4 years in points allowed. In that time they have given up 23 games of 21 or more points (record in those games are 9-14)...

03'(10-6)= 7 games (avg 24 ppg), the other 9 avg 9 ppg; record 3-4.

02'(9-7)= 7 games (avg 29 ppg), the other 9 avg 11 ppg; record 2-5.

01'(11-5)= 7 games (avg 26 ppg), the other 9 avg 12 ppg; record 3-4

00'(11-5)= 2 games (avg 32 ppg) the other 14 avg 19 ppg; record 1-1.

Tampa has an avg ranked defense of # 5 in the last 4 years in points allowed. In that time they have given up 17 games of 21 or more points (record in those games are 3-14)...

03'(7-9)= 5 games (avg 30 ppg), the other 11 avg 10 ppg; record 0-5.

02'(12-4)= 3 games (avg 24 ppg), the other 13 avg 9 ppg; record 1-2, and they won the SB.

01'(9-7)= 5 games (avg 26 ppg), the other 11 avg 14 ppg; record 1-4.

00'(10-6)= 4 games (avg 28 ppg), the other 12 avg 13 ppg; record 1-3.

Baltimore has an avg ranked defense of # 7 in the last 4 years in points allowed. In that same time they given up 24 games of 21 or more points (record in those games are 9-15)...

03'(10-6)= 4 games (avg 35 ppg), the other 12 avg 11 ppg; record 1-3.

02'(7-9)= 10 games (avg 24 ppg), the other 6 avg 14 ppg; record 4-6.

01'(10-6)= 8 games (avg 24 ppg), the other 8 avg 8 ppg, record 2-6.

00'(12-4)= 2 games (avg 29 ppg), the other 14 avg 6 ppg; record 2-0 and they won the SB.

Phili has an avg ranked defense of # 3.75 in the last 4 years in points allowed. In that time they given up 15 games of 21 or more points (record in those games are 6-9). They of course have made it to 3 NFC championship games.

03'(12-4)= 5 games (avg 27 ppg), the other 11 avg 13 ppg; record 2-3.

02'(12-4)= 4 games (avg 27 ppg), the other 12 avg 11 ppg; record 1-3.

01'(11-5)= 2 games (avg 21 ppg), the other 14 avg 12 ppg; record 1-1.

00'(11-5)= 4 games (avg 26 ppg), the other 12 avg 12 ppg; record 2-2.

Pit has an avg ranked defense of # 10 in the last 4 years in points allowed. In that time they have given up 28 games of 21 or more points (record in those games 8-20).

03'(6-10)= 8 games (avg 30 ppg), the other 8 avg 11 ppg; record 1-7.

02'(10-5)= 9 games (avg 28 ppg), the other 7 avg 13 ppg, record 3-5-1.

01'(13-3)= 4 games (avg 24 ppg), the other 12 avg 10 ppg; record 2-2.

00'(9-7)= 7 games (avg 26 ppg), the other 9 avg 8 ppg; record 2-5.

NE has an avg ranked defense of # 10.25 in the last 4 years in points allowed. In that time they have given up 27 games of 21 or more points (record in those games 8-19). They have made it to the SB 2 in that span.

03'(14-2)= 4 games (avg 30 ppg), the other 12 avg 9 ppg; record 3-1. Are in the SB...

02'(9-7)= 10 games (avg 27 ppg), the other 6 avg 12 ppg; record 3-7.

01'(11-5)= 5 games (avg 26 ppg), the other 11 avg 12 ppg; record 1-4.

00'(5-11)= 8 games (avg 26 ppg), the other 8 avg 15 ppg; record 1-7.

If you made it down this far, congratulations....:)

I think another problem is that our defence have been allowing too many long time consuming drives. Sometimes the other team only scares a field goal but they've kept the ball for 7 minutes as they droved 82 yards and the whole time our offence is on the sidelines. If Madden on that monday niter said it, "I thought this defence could tackle a lot better than that" and another guy said"for all the probowlers they have, they give up too many plays on 3rd down and sometimes they can't get off the field".I'm not saying we have a terrible defence but is not as great as some people here think.

Ozzy rules!!

Gotta agree with that one. You really can't expect your D to be perfect EVERY game. Its not reasonable.

In two of the 3 games Stamos posted, that was all the D's fault.

The O was playing great the last two games of the 02 season, we lost to Minn. and NE because of D, plain and simple.

Add the Buffalo game in 2002 in december, where we were scoring almost at will.

For all the people who were bitching in the offseason when we signed alot of defensive players, in 2002 we scored on average 27.1 points in Jay Fiedler's 10 starts, more then Buffalo, New York, and New England did under Bledsoe, Pennington, and Brady.

Just goes to show you, its easy to look at stats and rankings and misunderstand there meaning. But if our defense played great all year, until december when the games means something, then all their sacks, tackles, and interceptions mean SQUAT.

Finz Best Defensive Season was in 1973

Don't forget back in 96 or so we gave up under 100 points the entire season

I like to clarify the issue, the only time we gave up close to 100 points on the season was back in 1982 the strike season we gave up 131 points in 9 games (7-2). We went to the SB against the Redskins and lost it.

In 1998 we had the # 1 ranking in fewest points allowed with 265 points. From 93-97 we gave up over 300 points per season.

In the 14 game season of 73', our defense gave up only 150 points. This was the least points allowed in a full season from any Dolphin team (10.7 ppg). The Ravens allowed 165 total points in 2000 (10.3 ppg).

Since the start of the 16 game seasons in 1978 our best record for least points given was in 2000' with 226 points allowed (14.1 ppg).
