To a large degree, I think critics are wrong about our offense not having much talent. I think one the biggest difference between our offense and the Colts offense or the Patriots offense is that those guys have been playing in the same system for a while. Manning and his WR's are just like Marino and the Marks Brothers: Familiarity with a system and the players goes a long way in making a highly successful offense. The Patriots can simply add players to a system that has already led to three super bowl victories. It seems that for the past few years, for one reason or another, we've been changing our offense and our starting QB every season. We had Fiedler and Turner in 2003, then Feeley and Forester in 2004, then Frerrote and Linehan in 2005, and now Culpepper/Harrington and Mularkey in 2006. What will we have in 2007? I think the majority of our problems, especially with players we know can produce, stems from this lack of continuity.

You know every once in a while this website gets good posts. This is one of them.

Amen. But every regime seems to have a glaring weakness. Fielder = no arm. Frerotte = inaccurate past 20 yards. Feeley = throws to the other team.

this doesnt apply...we had one year with one offensive system under nick saban, and now nick saban, in his 2nd year, is trying to put in a permanent system.

this arguement doesnt work unless nick saban does this 3, or 4 years in a row...

did you guys want us to keep ferotte? we didnt have a choice in the offensive coordinator

while i agree this is a good reason WHY our offense is not clicking yet, it is not something you can BLAME on anyone though.

Who did we aquire to replace ferotte? Daunte, Where is Daunte, Sideline.

Mularkey may have been the only coordinator out there with NFL experience, but I think hes proven that there are times to give someone new a chance.

We were lied to as well for those of you who do not remember. Saban spoke the entire offseason on how we were going to keep Linehan's system in place. What ever happened to that plan?

Great point!! Saban said that the offense would be the same that they ran last year and it is clearly not. Tha Pats, regardless of who the coordinator is keep there system. Thats why they have been able to plug in other players and continue to be succesful. Yes, having Brady helps, but if you took Harrison and Wayne away from Manning do you think he would be as good with Gabriel and Caldwell?

I think you should get a better understanding of what Saban said was going to happen before you claim you were "lied" to.

When Mularkey came in, they retained Scott Linehan's terminology and verbage for calling plays. There are a handful of different names for plays, ranging from numbers to colors to geographic locations, and they are different depending on your offense and coaches. Instead of switching to whatever Mularkey has used, they made him learn the terminology that Linehan used and the offense already knew.

It's still Mike Mularkey's plays, tendencies, formations etc, just using someone elses names for them.

I'm so confused. I thought we were keeping Linehan's system, now you say we only kept the terminology? How does that help continuity?

Hmm, Feilder/Turner was under Dave.

Linehan and Ferotte were stop gap and the play book was carried over. So, I fail to see any point in this thread as DC was signed to be the long term QB with a long term playbook so regardless who calls the plays they would be the same which basically negates the entire OP.

It helps because, as Saban put it, you have one person learning a new language instead of the entire offense. So, we asked the new coordinator to change the terminology of his offense to match out existing terminology. For example (and a made-up example at that) MM may have referred to a particular pass route as 'Omaha' while the Linehan system called it 'Tiger'. Since our QB, WRs, RBs, TEs, Oline, etc all were familiar with 'Tiger' we asked the coordinator to change. But in either system, the route is the same.

So, the play design, the play selection, and the flow of the offense is all Malarkeys -- but the language he was used to using to describe those plays was translated into on the majority of the players were already familiar with.

LOSTINPATSLAND:

it is a good post. and this is why last year I DID NOT WANT
scott linehan as our oc.

the guy is great, as he proved when he was here and as he is
proving with the rams. he was the show here, not nick.

but i knew he would be on a short list for a few teams h/c
job and would be gone. it is true, we cant get a new offense
every year and expect to accomplish much.

the finz need to start hitiing the bricks and searching out
a young up and comer who isnt getting an h/c job any
time soon. thre out there, guys who KNOW offense and
just need the bump up.

getting the hot ticket that is waiting on his h/c deal to
happen or grabbing the over rated bum [like mularky] is
just not the way to go.

Yes - Manning is THAT good...

I to would want an up and coming guy, someone with a little bit of a reputation but not someone with as much as mularkey has.
