Sorry if there has already been a thread on this. Why do we keep calling defensive plays near the goal line with no linebackers or safetys anywhere near the middle of the field and let the quarterback walk right in? Matt Cassell did this against us and Matt Schaub won the game with 3 seconds left on fourth down because of this. After watching the Pats game I am starting to question our defensive coordinator for this and other reasons. Can anybody tell me if this defense is something that is common in the NFL. I really haven't noticed it before.

I'm not sure if its common, but you'd definetely think that we would have an LB SOMEWHERE in the middle of the field, after we lost that game we should have won to the Texans, and just knowing the Cassel can scramble now.. I will be extrememly dissapointed if this happens again

that is where inexperience comes in old buddy..

the big tuna should have things in place by 2010.

RDS Holiday

no posting on fin heaven during these dates for RDS :hi5:
yeah but RDS...these coaches&coordinators have been in the game of football for a great deal of years, they should know better than to allow the middle to be wide open like that,as should the players...it makes no sense to me either...

In 2010, we're gonna be a much meaner team than we are now, it will be amazing

Ok, sure its not something were great at but how can you say we KEEP letting QB's walk into the endzone on us. Its only happened twice. If it had happened like 4-5 times then i would be way more worried. I do get your point though.

well for some reason we feel like spreading out the defensive line when the opponents are close to our endzone.

But there was absolutely no body in the middle of the field on both plays. It was like a ghost town. I think I saw a tumble weed blow through there. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it, and for it to happen twice. I almost broke things in my house during that play in the Texas game. It was unacceptable

When the offense goes 5 wide you need to have someone covering the receivers. If you keep an LB in the middle then there will be someone uncovered.... You just have to hope that the DL can make a play

I may be wrong but if we ran a 4-3 isn't there (3 LBs, 2 Safetys, 2 CBs) seven guys against a 5 WR set. The math says there's extra players for the middle. If you ran a 3-4 you would have one more.

your not gonna be in a base defense against a 4 or 5 wide reciever set. most likely there will be 4 or 5 db's on the field.
