We lost out on Brees twice, no way we lose out on Manning

Peyton Manning may have more in common with Daunte Culpepper than Drew Brees if we bring him in with what he is facing now.

this is the way i look at it:

we had our chance to draft a franchise qb halfway through the year, but by telepathically willing the dolphins to a substantial amount of wins in the 2nd half of the season, we no longer realistically have that option. the price to trade up for RG3 is very very steep, although I would possibly consider it, despite his rather diminutive size (by NFL QB standards, not by our recently drafted QB standard set by Beck and White). nonetheless, i always despise the idea of trading future high picks, and therefore am inclined to say F*ck it and roll the dice with Manning. the dude is a workout beast and the anecdotal stories by fellow posters of how they had a similar surgery and now their arm gets tired when the'yre drinking beer cant convince me that he wont make an almost full recovery. either way, we will be able to get a good prediction of his status when we work him out. Peyton showed absolutely no signs of slowing down up until last year, he has less wear and tear than Dan did at this point in his career. the reward/risk ratio is astronomical; if hes back to anything above 80%, we are in the playoffs no doubt. if its a flop, a) we are used to it, we'll deal, and b) we will be in position to draft a good QB in 2013.

my caveat is that I do wish Flynn had a live arm, then I wouldnt be really considering this. all the pieces fit, except his arm doesnt impress me. do you all remember how many 3rd and longs Dan converted for us throwing those deep 15, even 20yd curl/comeback routes at the sidelines? i grew up on that, and miss it. Flynn isnt throwing those. that is one of the most effective passing plays available, but only a qb with a great arm, as well as respect of the defense can throw it. very afraid that Flynn will usher in a new 3-4 year era of mediocrity. maybe i need to see more video on him, but its obviously sparse. on the other hand, i do clearly remember him throwing a pass during this past preseason for a long touchdown that made me think he was already better than any of our qbs.

IF he's healthy and cheap / free, you get him. Period. If he has any chance of performing like 2009/10 Manning, he could take this team to a Super Bowl, no question.

I'm more than willing to suggest, if he's as he was in 2009/10, he EASILY has more talent around him than he did with the Colts. The defensive side alone, even with it's short comings, is light years ahead of what Indy was trotting out on the field.

IF P-Manning is healthy, its a no brainer. Throw Ross' money at him, just structure it so it doesn't handcuff us.

Can you guys see B-marsh, Hartline, R-Bush and especially Bess with Manning spotting them?

Peyton won't want to come here once he finds out that Ross has given Jeff Ireland final say on all audibles.

I think the two black eyes for this teams history, if you could narrow it down to only two, would be Jamar Fletcher and Daunte Culpepper, the two shmucks we took instead of Drew Brees. Is Matt Flynn going to be the third? Or are we going to man up, put on our big boy pants, and find a way to make the best quarterback of a generation our franchise starter for the next 5 years?

Seriously if we blow this, I can't imagine saying to myself for the rest of my life; "We could have had Peyton Manning"

A few thoughts on your post:

1) We are not even sure Peyton will physically ever play again.

2) I would also add spending the #2 overall pick on Ronnie Brown over Aaron Rogers as a major mistake of the last decade or so...IMO.

3) Flynn may be the obvious fallback should Manning be unable to play, being that we will be running the same system he already knows from Green Bay...its a no-brainer.

4) We might not win out getting either being that there are other horses in the race as well (and Mannings injury situation), and we may be forced to either trade up for RG3 or draft one of the other prospects (I like Tannehill). I also liked Brees and Rogers when they came out.

Something else to consider: let's say Manning passes a physical, decides he doesn't want to stay in Indianapolis and the Dolphins sign him.

Now, the entire offense has to be HIS offense. The new offensive coordinator will have to design an entire offense to suit Peyton, not the other way around (do you really think that Peyton is willing to learn a new offense and not slip back into old habits after playing in his system for all these years?). Will Peyton have the same level of communication with the rest of the new-to-him offense that he did after years of repetition with Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Joseph Addai and Jeff Saturday?

OK, now let's say that the rest of the offensive players pick up Peyton's offense reasonably well. What happens if Peyton gets hurt mid-season? The offense is designed for Peyton, not anyone else. Will the next QB (Matt Moore, Pat Devlin, etc.) be able to play Peyton's system? How long will the learning curve be? It's one thing to experiment in training camp with what works and what doesn't. It's another thing to do it on-the-fly mid-season, as what happened to us just this last season when the switch was made from Henne to Moore. To Moore's credit, once the offense got in sync, the results were refreshing, but it did take a while.

I, for one, do not want to turn SunLife Stadium in Peyton's Place.
