If we are going to be a run and short to medium pass sort of offense for the rest of the season then we must complete an early deep pass. We have to have the threat to throw deep if we are going to be successful from here on out with this type of offense.

This can make or break or season and I believe this is tremendously understated. Just saying...

We'll hit some. Just like last season, when a team finally decided to start cheating up on us (Carolina), we made going deep the plan, and burned them twice. Chicago was scared of Mike Wallace going deep and didn't give us the opportunity to throw it to him.

The only time I saw a guy get open deep on Sunday, it was.. Brian Hartline. Ryan Tannehill made the right decision and checked down.

So the first pass of the game is going to make or break our season?

Why?????

### Tannehill was very good in play action last season (109.6 passer rating) and Lazor has utilized that more. Tannehill already has 58 throws in play action and is on pace for 155 --- which would easily surpass last year’s 90 --- and has an 87.6 rating on play action passes, per Pro Football Focus.

### Tannehill hasn’t even thrown a “classic” deep ball in the past few games partly because Lazor apparently prefers to run plays that have a better chance of success.

Last season, Tannehill threw 64 passes that traveled 20 or more yards in the air and completed only 16, with six interceptions.

This season, he’s 5 for 18 with two picks on those passes and is on pace to throw among the fewest in the league (48).

Tannehill has already become the team’s best offensive weapon. In the 254 snaps where he has been the offense’s focal point (including passes, quarterback runs and sacks), the Dolphins have averaged 5.9 yards per play. In the 148 snaps where he has not been, the average drops to 4.5.

His Achilles’ heel remains the deep throw. Tannehill has connected on just 5 of 18 attempts thrown 20 or more yards this season, with only one touchdown.

Lazor’s solution: Don’t call those plays. Just 1 in 12 Dolphins passes have been of that length this year; only Green Bay takes fewer deep shots than Miami.

After last week RT17 is now 4 for 19 on passes thrown over 21 yards. Slowly improving after starting 0 for 12

idk Tannehill throws a perfect deep ball when its hartline. but you are right Hartline drops the deep ones

First play? No.....eventually during the game. Would be nice, but unnecessary considering the success we've had with short and intermediate routes.

Not sure if that number is improving due to better timing or not dropping the ball.

I don't believe the 0 for 12 number is accurate given that he hit Mike Wallace for a 22 yard completion against New England and that one was basically all in the air.

No reason to get cute.
Do what works and if a WIDE open receiver deep presents himself, then let it fly.

So the first pass of the game is going to make or break our season?

I agree... if we dont hit the deep pass on the first play of the game... we might as well go home and make plans for next year... The OP already stated its a "must" and to fail or alter from his game plan "must" mean there is no alternatives..

Looks like he has hit on at least one in each of the last 3 games and 2 last game. Not sure about the 22 yarder against New England.
