Most dolphin fans don't like the jets because they're a dirty team usually, but they always play hard, just like the dolphins, so it should be a tough game. They were supposed to get a high pick, but they don't lay down so you gotta respect that. Our improved d should match their o better but like somebody mentioned Gase is going to have to throw downfield more if he wants to win, just because we're a lot more talented than them overall doesn't mean it won't be close if Gase keeps his play not to lose mentality.
I heard Gase mentioned in his pc that he went for it more on 4th down because of who he was playing against. If that's the case that's a bad sign because it means he always plays to his opponent, rather than just trying to win outright which would explain why we are usually in close games no matter the opponent. The same mentality Philbin and Sparano had which is not good. It's a fixed game plan entering the game and is as bad or good as your opponent which isn't good for building a winning culture, although it's perfect for 8-8.
We'll see, it's all on Gase to change and adapt more, if he doesn't in the future he's just another Philbin sadly. He can win with this talent but you never wanna win despite your coach. Loved where he went for it on those 4th's last game. I'm hoping that he's starting to understand the situation more and when you should and shouldn't go for it rather than it just being that it was him playing to his opponent. That 4th when we were down 14-17 at like 4th and 3 on their 50 or 45 was the perfect example. He punts it and gains maybe 30 yards or risks gaining 3 yards and winning/tieing the game, it's a small smart risk that was the turning point in the game, Philbin would have punted that every time.
This is exactly what I'm talking about when I've mentioned instincts and understanding flow and momentum of the game and how much coaching decisions change it, we were rolling there and he kept it rolling. That long Landry reception felt like karma, if you take the risk at the right time usually you will get rewarded for it. It's not about just taking risks, its about taking risks at the right time based on instinct/momentum/if it's intelligent to do so based on good risk/reward percentages. If you only have to risk a little to gain a lot and its a close game you do it. If you're up by 14 and your defense is playing well but your offense isn't you punt it there usually. If your offense is finally getting a rythym and your still up 14 with 10 mins left and your d has been playing well but they have been on the field way too much and exhausted you risk it there. Every situation is different and you gotta have the right instincts based on momentum or something you feel or intelligence based on game situation to make the right call. Gotta let you're team know you're trying to win as a hc but also be smart to know when to pull back and play safe, being smart is doing both things at their right time.
Philbin's teams quit on him because they knew he wasn't trying to win, if your coach tries to win you will see a team fight for them. Hopefully Gase realized that he had to try to continue momentum there and try to win like his team was because you should take your chances when its the right timing and you shouldn't let an opposing offense back on the field if you can take a small risk for potentially a huge gain. That's what happened there and it changed the game because there was no guarantee our defense stops them again and we have that opportunity again down 14-17 in that field position.
