I have recently learned that the Jaguars cut WR Chad Owens and managed to somehow get him passed waivers and onto the practice squad.
IMO, the Dolphins rolled the dice on Boston, he didn't turn up 7's, and that’s cool it’s ok, but now they need to part ways with him in favor of a guy with the talent of Owens.
Before you crucify me, let me make my case.
Boston's ENTIRE value in peoples’ eyes, and the following he has gathered, is based almost solely on what he did 3 years ago. Two patellar tendon and numerous other injuries later, why are we still so convinced that he WILL become the same player again?
Why are we so convinced that the guy is anything but the next Larry Shannon or Charles Jordan? Sure, he's looked good in practice, but during games at full speed, he does not look so good. He does not give good effort with the ball in the air (and really NEVER has in his career, he's always been a guy to run after the catch), and his much-talked-about speed just isn't there.
What good is his 6’2†235 pound frame when he refuses to use his body in the air to shield defenders away from the ball? The only thing he does is run after the catch now, but it isn’t like he’s got a second gear like Terrell Owens, and the guy isn’t nifty enough anymore to get open in the intermediate areas in order to give him the opportunity to run with the ball in his hands.
If we keep David Boston on the roster, get use to this play: David Boston, lined up wide, steps back and takes a lateral pass from the QB at the line of scrimmage, shakes a defender loose at the line, and rumbles for 8 yards before being tackled by a safety. That’s it. That is the extent of his repertoire during preseason and the regular season. Sure, we’ve had him streak down the field a few times, and once or twice he even manages to get past defenders, but Gus can’t fit the ball in with him so that he can catch it completely on the run, and that means we either overthrow David or underthrow him. And, guess what happens when it is underthrown. You guessed it, Boston doesn’t give a good effort to use his body and leaping ability to come down with the ball. Best he can do is try and make sure the defender doesn’t get it.
If we had a premium quarterback, I would feel differently about this, because Boston would be a weapon that we could use to score points. Right now, he’s not. And he’s only here for one year.
At least THIS offseason he's been a model citizen, unlike oh, just about every year he’s been in the league. But, the most important thing is he's on a one year contract! So let me get this straight, this guy through 2 games obviously looks like he's not going to help us all that much this season, and after this season he becomes a free agent?
He's a lame duck. We don't need lame ducks. I would rather pick up a guy who might be able to help us some time in the future, rather than keep a guy who people keep getting misty-eyed about just because of what he did 3 years ago.
Why was Chad Owens cut? Because he muffed 3 punts within an 11 minute span against the Indianapolis Colts. OK, that is VERY bad. And, the Jags probably feel he lost them the game.
But we HAVE a punt returner who doesn’t (usually) muff punts. I’m looking at Chad Owens the wide receiver. And Chad Owens the wide receiver was good enough, shifty enough, and savvy enough to keep uber-human Matt Jones as 4th on the depth chart.
Let me give you some background. The Miami-Jacksonville preseason game was not the only Jacksonville preseason game I watched. I happen to be a pretty big Matt Jones fan. I think he will be the next Randy Moss, he will dominate the league in ways we did not think receivers could dominate the league. I believe he will eventually force defensive coaches to devise whole new methods of defense just to stop HIM. That’s how good I think he will be.
So I watched a bunch of Jacksonville this preseason. And you know what I saw? Yeah I saw Jones’ physical gifts and savvy, but the guy stealing the show was Chad Owens. What I noticed is he’s one of those little guys that is fast as all heck and just has that knack for finding all the holes between zones. In Hawaii’s offense, that’s what he did full time basically is shake single coverage and find the holes between zones. If we don’t have a premium name quarterback who can fit the ball into tight spaces deep down the field to take advantage of a David Boston, then I want a Chad Owens who is going to help our quarterback move the chains by finding the holes between zones and beating single coverage.
In other words, I want another Wes Welker.
Now, mainly I want us to grab Chad Owens. He can’t be happy being cut by the Jags just because of a bad game on special teams. He’s on their practice squad, and I think he deserves better. So, it’s not like I’m all determined that we just HAVE to get rid of David Boston. But I’m also not denying the benefits of doing so.
1. Cutting David Boston sends a CLEAR message to players on offense that you give 100% effort on every play, or you are out of here and I don’t care how much potential you have. It would be a far more effective message than just dropping David to 4th on the depth chart behind Wes Welker (which is what I currently advocate, if we don’t go for Owens).
2. We need to clear a roster spot in order to sign Chad Owens, and quite frankly, I’d rather it be a guy who is short-timing it right now rather than a younger guy who may actually help us at some point in the future. I mean sure, we COULD get rid of one of the no-name recent acquisitions instead of Boston. But I think Burger may be able to help us.
3. Has anyone noticed that we’ve acquired a player from every single team we’ve played so far and that we will play through the first five games of the offseason? We already had Donnie Spragan from the Broncos, and coincidentally we knew all of the Broncos’ defensive calls. Then, when it was final cut/waiver time, three players we grabbed were from the Jets, Panthers, and Buccaneers. Hmm, next three games on the schedule after the Broncos were the Jets, Panthers, and Buccaneers…just a conspiracy theory? Probably…but I’m guessing Saban would show a lot more interest in Owens if we played Jacksonville this season…
