Miami must do the following to win with Chad Pennington.
1) Have to see a lot of 3rd and shorts.
2) Protect the pocket with extra time.
3) Rely on short passes to substain long drives.
4) Have a solid running game established early in the game.
5) Defense that does not give up a lot of points early.
6) Very good punter, not a crack, just need to get good field position for the defense.
7) Trick passes to get big plays using the passing game.
8) Cannot turn the ball over, multiple times during the game.
While I think he is our best QB right now, he does handcuff the offense. Today the Falcons applied a ton of pressure & clamped down HARD on the short crossing routes. This alone can keep Chad under 200 yards passing and pile up some sacks.
Miami's playcalling early was not good at all. They must stick with the run early to help get Chad some open routes on the short passes. If not, Chad will only take the high percentage pass that the defense gives on purpose. This will result in a lot of punts and allow the other team to get the lead. This is the worest thing for Miami, being down and giving up on the run.
Miami's defense played a good game all things considered. When you defense has 6 possesions that start inside their side of the field, bad things will happen. They played damn good to only give up 19 points. Even with the Kicker missing a million kicks, they did not allow a TD buffet for the Falcons.
Jake Long struggled badly today and was outplayed on at least 5 plays. I just hope that people here on the site do not start the bum threads. It is early in his career and he is going to have a lot more games just like this in his career. Every OL has bad games and he is no different. He just needs to learn from it and improve his game.
Matt Ryan played like a 10 year vet today. His arm, vision and mobility is enough to beat just about any defense. But giving him excellent field position is too much to overcome for any team. It allows them to open up their playbooks and eat up a defenes mistakes.
The Dolphins defense vs. the run was on lock down mode. The only big plays came vs. a very tired defense late in the game. Hats off to stuffing the run today. The defense played good enough to win this game. But the offense simply gave it away with bad plays, no protection, giving up on the run & poor passes.
It's not the end of the world for Miami, they have showed that the defense can keep them in the game. The offense is going to need a lot of support from the running game. Teams are going to continue to clamp down on the short passes. Chad Pennington does not attempt enough deep balls during the game.
I think Miami will stick with Chad and see if he can manage the game better right now. They really have no choice with the first part of the season. We have some killer games coming up and he is still our best option to win. But it will not happen if the offense plays the same in games to come. Either he will drop his % and start forcing deep balls or Chad Henne will see playing time after week 5.
It sucks to lose any game, but it was easy to see why we lost today. Let's hope they can learn from it and tweak the offense enough so that we can be 2-2 after the first 4 games. Because right now we look like an 0-4 start in the making. All it takes is for the defense to keep playing hard and the running game to get started. Then Miami can still come out 3-1...but that is a VERY LONG SHOT, and Chad Pennington does not even know the word LONG...unless it's related to Jake Long struggling today.
