Well, if nothing else at least it's been active. That said, I believe we're on the precipice of yet another rebuilding year. Let's review:
Letting Philbin ride out his last year: I'm thinking this was more of a cost savings than anything. He really should've gone at the end of last season, and I believe he will be at the end of this one.
Hiring Mike Tannenbaum: This is a tough one. I know that it's easy to want to place blame on one single individual (usually in the FO) for the failings of a team, so I'm reluctant to do that, but it's hard to look past the Jets track record during his duration there. While it's also easy to give him credit for representing and acquiring a lot of high-level talent, I think any snake oil salesman with enough money behind them could do that. Ross could've done it on his own with Cowher, Harbaugh, Manning, etc. if he'd been any kind of salesman (and he wasn't forcing those individuals to be stuck with his chosen FO staff, and our team didn't suck).
Stadium Renovations: Just like everyone here seems to love the new logo (which I still think is the worst in the NFL), it seems lots of people are in favor of these renovations. While I think extending the seats closer to the field is a good thing, and having new seats and video screens will probably prove to be good in the end, I think that monstrosity they plan on putting on the roof is the biggest piece of **** I've ever seen. I think if anything, it will turn the stadium into a giant sauna because there is no ventilation from the sides. Not to mention, having the hole in the roof will probably cast all kinds of shadows on the field. I'm not even necessarily in favor of an entirely new stadium (though I'm not opposed) because I like keeping history in one location, but this just sucks in my opinion. I would've rather they left it alone, or at least not do the roof thing. We are now I believe the only team in the NFL that still has an all-purpose field, and it's starting to seem to me that Ross' propensity for bringing Super Bowls to Miami, outweighs his desire to get his team into said Super Bowls.
Acquiring Suh/Cutting: Hartline, Gibson, Finnegan, Odrick…and more to come! Not loving this at all. I could get really long-winded here, so I'll try not to, but basically we made a ton of cap space for Suh. While I know that Ross loves his big name players he can market, and Tannenbaum needed to make his stamp, Suh can't carry the whole team! I would even argue that this will go down as a really bad decision. He is a play marker, no doubt. We should all be excited about his arrival in Miami (I know I am), but whereas this team had a handful of positions that needed to be addressed this offseason, we've know traded one problem for another. We are in a division with one of the greatest passers of all-time, why the hell would you let your pro bowl corner go? Did they not see how his absence was exploited when he was injured? What about Hartline and Gibson, is our entire receiving corps now Wallace and Landry? Landry's been good, and has plenty of long term potential so he's fine for now, but what about Wallace? How many times has he connected with Tannehill on the deep ball? Once, twice? Maybe? We never should've let Marshall go. Now on to Suh…Don't we have the same coach that didn't want anybody with character issues on the team? This guy is gonna be getting flags thrown left and right, he doesn't have the reputation of being one of the dirtiest players in the game for nothing, and now he can add highest-priced to that mantel. I love the guys play, so I'm not disputing that he will add a lot to this team, but if it came at the expense of having to cut some of our most productive guys, was it really worth it in the long run?
Tannehill $100 million dollar extension: If this comes to fruition it might be the move that finally causes my brain to explode this offseason. I don't like Tannehill, it's not a secret, its fine if you disagree with me. That said, this has been an experiment from day 1, and while he has improved each year, has it to been to the level to warrant an extension of this magnitude? No way. This problem is compounded by the fact that in the very real possibility this season tanks and we lose Philbin (and possibly Hickey as well), whoever comes in next will be saddled with Tannehill's enormous contract, basically handcuffing them from making any significant moves without having to release half the roster.
…and we're not even to the draft yet.
I haven't felt this bad about or prospects since 2007. I'd love to be wrong, but NE is firing on all cylinders still, and while the Jets and Bills are rarely ever a threat, they are both going through big shake-ups, so it's not out of the question that one or both could be significantly improved this year.
If you had to assign the offseason to this point a letter grade, where are you at? I'm at a "C" right now.
