This was last years biggest problem...

I mean how many games did we almost lose / lose because of horrible special teams?

this pre-season once again it's been our weakest point...

with an offense as inconsistent as ours, field position is going to be a key deciding factor in most of our games...

why are our special team coverage units so bad? Any insight??

In my opinion, putting Bess back on PRs is giving up on the return. He's got LB speed and is almost 100 percent guaranteed NOT to take it to the house, and puts very little pressure on the defense. Very little.

He IS sure handed, but that's giving up a whole lot when other teams have PRs that put huge pressure on other teams. Playing a whole season without that kind of lightning potential on PRs is only going to make special teams worse, imo.

Whatever though.

I'm sure there are hundreds of people willing to say Bess is the greatest PR ever, just like he's a "better WR than Hakeem Nicks" and the "number one WR on this team."

unbelievable. frustrating.

The coverage had been solid the first two games, but they look bad tonight. Bess is nothing special as a KR, but we don't have anyone else who is good at taking care of the ball. Ginn would be nice to put back there, but then you'd be worrying about every kick being muffed and recovered by the coverage team. Anyways, I think our coverage will be better this year than it was last year.

I think they'll make a trade or sign someone to handle PR (and possibly KR) duties. Ginn looked decent on kickoff returns but it's not ideal to have him back there.

Bess is way too slow to return.

He was getting caught by a LB wearing a number in the 50's to the outside.. Think it was Tampa's #54...... And Bess had the angle on him early in the run, but got beat to the edge by a Linebacker who made up the angle Bess had!

We need a punt returner.

Maybe someone should tell him that he should run north/south...not east/ west.

There's a reason why I refer to them as our not-so-special teams.

Well, to defend Bess, at least he has proven he can catch the damn ball. Sure he may never take it to the house, but at least he will not cost us points by muffing the punt.

I think our coverage is a big worry. I'm not sure who excatly is on our coverage teams, but at the tail end of last season, our kick coverage improved dramatically when we signed Kershaw and Walden.

But I presume they are still on it, so not sure whats going on.

There will be someone that is cut that we will pick up to return kicks... Bess is the sure handed fill in until that time comes...

Yeah that was Gino Hayes, linebacker. It's pretty embarrassing when your PR can't even outrun a linebacker...

hard to run north/south when you're surrounded by the other team......until we get a sure handed PR who can get us some yards I rather have someone back there who doesn't give up a turnover...

Great point. I know the first priority is to secure the ball...but with Bess back there, thats all you get. And hell, with all the rest of the problems, I guess thats not the worst of it.

I can live with having no returns. I cannot live with not being able to tackle their guys. Fields needs to punt EVERY punt out of bounds because our return guys cannont tackle. They CANNOT tackle. Its unbelievable.

Guys, complaining about Bess (even though its true hes not ever going to break a big return) is akin to complaining about the color of the drapes when there is a hole in the roof. Its our coverage teams that suck, not our return teams.

Although with the way our offense is progressing, if we dont score from STs we might not score at all.
