OK now that Ricky has screwed up any plans that Saban had as for using him as trade bait, I don't see us getting a step in starter at the QB position. So even if we somehow trade up, which we will no doubt have to give up a lot, we will still be looking at either Frerrote (spell??) or a pure rookie as our starter. So as someone has stated in a previous post I don't see us being a Super Bowl contender this coming year. We will no doubt get less for Ricky due to this incident, no matter how good he is.
QB is no doubt our # 1 need. We need to go get one, a good one to move forward. Sabans system can only get us so far.

Drew Brees is a free agent, Steve Mcnair might be, there are plenty of options

Dont look at the draft for a QB

nothings changed since Ricky's last test.

those who think he was gonna somehow garner us a 1st or 2nd round pick, or allow us to move into the top 5 to get one of the big three QBs are kidding themselves....

if we drafted any of these qbs i still don't see us being a true superbowl contender this year.

Ricky Williams will be playing for the Dolphins in 2006.

Drew Brees will be Dolphins QB.

Nothing changed so to answer the original post...right, we are still not a SB contender. We never were. A lot of things would have to go right for us to be considered a contender. It was never going to be a 2 year turnaround.
Remember? "Make haste slowly."
If we got our QB this year, that would be great. If not, Saban will continue to build the team this year, and see if a more favorable QB possibility comes next year. Or the rookie we grab this year (not necessarily in first round), may make strides. He may not.

Let's just see how it plays out and how much closer we get to being a top team this year.

The only ones with a great need for a QB and cap room as of now

Other teams like Oakland and Arizona MIGHT be interested but they are out because Oakland is in cap hell and Arizone resigned Warner to a pretty good deal

The Ravens also MIGHT be but I doubt it since they seem commited to Boller for at least one more year

So as it is now Detroit and Us are the only ones seemingly

If I was Arizona and Baltimore, I'd still be in the race.

He's not out of SD yet. Marty made statements yesterday at the combine that he wants Brees backand acknowledging that the whole organization is NOT on the same page here. There's a lot of public sentiment for him. He's been putting himself on local TV, doing push-ups, etc. and basically saying, "Look, my shoulder is coming along just fine." He also been publicly saying that this is HIS team.

And if this free agency start gets pushed back, that's just more time for them to find some middle ground.

i thought we were $8 mil over the cap?

and what about the Jets and Vikes.... if the Jets dump Pennington and the Vikes trade/dump Culpepper, that's two more teams you can count in the Brees sweepstakes.
