Wes Welker is our number three receiver. And I do not have a problem with that. But there is some talk on this boards about downgrading him to number 4. Should he be downgraded, and why? (wait for the poll please).

I think he should play the position that best suits his abilities....a slot reciever, who is not afraid to go across the middle....

With our current recievers, he shouldn't be downgraded. But if we go out and grab someone in free agency that can outperfrom him and make big plays, then yes. Right now, Welker should be 3. He made some big plays for us and was really big for us on 3rd downs. I don't think there is anyone on the roster that deserves to take his spot. So I'll vote no. But it's subject to change based on what happens down the road.

no, on one condition though, if we find someone better then he should be our #4 no lower though, but i would like him to be our #3, he showed a lot of flashes of being a great slot reciever, and it was only his first year at it, i think he could be pretty good at it, id like his to be #3 for at least one more year hopefully more....

The moment we have a receiver better than him, he will be, but until then, he is our 3rd best receiver.

Why would you want to demote him for? Welker is a great slot WR and he is one of the few WR's that isn't afraid to go up the middle and getting creamed. He always gets back up and ready for the next play.

If he's downgraded to 4th receiver then I'd like to see a lot more 4 receiver sets because he always comes up big.

:yeahthat: He has done a very good job at slot, however he is not the typical 3 WR set posession big slot reciever. I love the guy, I think he has been an incredible pickup by Saban and Co. but I think he would do even better as a 4 in 4 wideout situations. Also, I like to save the guy for his incredible special team plays. JMO

I wonder why they start Bryan Gilmore over Welker, when Booker is out... :shakeno:

Height and speed. It's just too bad Bryan can't catch.

Because then they would lose the mismatch that Welker gives as the 3rd WR. They would have no one to do all the things he does...he can't be the 2nd and 3rd WR at the same time/

Welker is a nice role player. He is very good at the return position. He is not that good of a WR though. There are usually one of two things that you want in a slot reciever. (#3 WR)....either a burner that can draw coverage away from your TE and outside recievers or open the middle up for you short passes to the RBs and TEs out of the backfield or a big brusing guy that will catch the ball across the middle of the field and make defenders pay attention. He is neither of those guys. He is fast, but not a burner. He is not big or tall enough to worry defenders in the middle of the field. He's done some nice things this season and Linehan has utilized him well, but he just isn't all that as a WR. He's not a WR that other defenses have to worry about or scheme to cover.

One of the reasons I think people are enamored by Welker is that early in the season when RM and CC were having the dropsies and Gus was still trying to get his accuracy down with them, he was a successful target. Later in the year, we saw that he couldn't get open consistently and in a lot of cases a LB would jam him on the line and/or a safety was used to cover him instead of CB and that was enough to negate his success.

Another reason I think people are enamored with Welker is that we haven't had a 3rd WR that was worth his salt in several years...(like since CC got here). There were times when WW actually did take some of the pressure off of CC and MB.

I don't think he needs to be cut or anything drastic..he has value to the team as a returner and WR in case of injury or as the #4 guy. I do think that the #3 WR spot can be upgraded...

Because why change two position players when one guy is out. If you move Welker to the #2 spot when MB is out, then you have to have Gilmore play the #3 spot. Well, then you have Welker playing out of position and Gilmore playing out of position. Gilmore was our backup to CC and MB, Welker was the #3 guy and returner...Makes good sense to do it this way. The problem is that while Gilmore has the size and speed you want in a WR, he just can't consistently catch the ball and make plays.

Wes Welker is not the slot guy because he is/was/will be the 3rd best WR we have, He's the slot because he IS the best option for the position.
