Ok, he's a huge fan favourite and yesterday I wore his jersey around college with pride, but im worried at the minute, is Wes in danger of being cut? :boohoo:

Isnt Kelly Campbell a return man also? Or can Wes stay on the roster as a 3/4 choice WR and a punt return man?

Can someone just please ease my worries and tell me that theres a good chance Welker stays on the team in 2006 at least. :D

He's such a class act and a very good special teams player. He also came through with some key catches aswell last season. I dont want to see this kid leave.:shakeno:

With the signing of Kelly I don't think it's completely out of the question, but I don't see it happening either.

No, I don't think so. Kelly Campbell has been signed to replace Bryan Gilmore on special teams and 4th WR. He is a gunner on defensive special teams just as Gilmore was, and he will probably compete to return kickoffs. He may be the 2nd guy to return kick offs with Welker.

I think they want to get Welker off kickoff returns, which is fine as he lacks that longer speed you need for that role. Wes though is coming on really well as a slot receiver, and even with the addition of Campbell, Wes is still the only guy on the roster who is truly comfortable in that role. 29 catches, 434 yards with a healthy 15 yard average, and he is due peanuts for salary next year as well.

when it comes to returning kickoffs, don't forget about Shirdonya Mitchell. I keep on reading that we are very high on him, and he could be a starter in the secondary in the future, but for now more of a nickel/dime back that will compete for returning duties.

Wes is an excelent Punt Return man. His kickoff returning is not quite as good. I see Kelly as our KR and Wes as the PR. Then they battle it out for who is on top WR wise.

I think we'll keep Welker on...Saban will make use of each players' strengths so I expect to see welker returning some punts.

Yeah...I really hope we keep Wes, I love the guy.

IMO he's been WAY too consistent as a number three WR and he's good under pressure! We'd be making a mistake to cut him... I could see him being the PR and Campbell being the KR though, that would be a good combo and keep them fresher! :D

I'm a fan of Welker; but I think Campbell was signed to challenge Welker for the #3 WR spot which I believe Campbell will eventually win. Did you noticed Campbells stats, and the one stat that stick out is his 2003 and 2004 ypc. He averaged 20.4 and 18.3 ypc in those years, in translation; he's a deep threat. Campbell is capable of getting seperation from defenders, and we need another WR capable of doing that. Campbell is taller and faster than Welker, and that is what we are looking for in a #3 WR. The fact that he is a PR and KR should be a cause for concern too, but I think Campbell will fill Bryan Gilmore's shoes in those aspects, as in the #2 return man. It's possible they could share those duties if Campbell turns out to be a better KR than Welker.

In the end, I think it will look like this:

Kelly Campbell: our #3 WR, #1 KR, and #2 PR
Wes Welker: or #4 WR, #1 PR, and #2 KR

I don't necessarily see him being cut, but I suspect Kelly will be doing the KO returns, which Welker was a little weak at. Campbell and DC have a history, but he's been out of football for a year...WW is a nice role player but KC is an upgrade, IMO...We still have a slot for #4 WR and PR that WW can fill...

saban will not cut welker and if he does it will be his 1st dumb move wes is the man and can do it all, i remember saban saying wes might play a little corner if we had any more injuries (when sam and howard were hurt) wes can do it all if mare goes down he can step in. you dont cut a guy like that, campbell will probably get in trouble and get cut and wes will just be working his a** off to win a championship!

It seems that everyone is missing the fact that Gilmore is considered one of the top special teams players in the NFL. Not for kickoffs, but as a Gunner. The guy that runs down and trys to down the punt near the endzone as well as the first to race down and try to takle the returner. Campbell I have read is an upgrade to Gilmore because he is just as good as a gunner, and a more consistent wide receiver and a good kick returner. I don't see Welker's role changing much, but rather replace Glimore with Campbell.
