Sometimes it is easy to forget where we were this time last year. Can you stop and think about what your opinion of NFL football was a year ago?? I for one was unable to even get excited. At this point last year we had won exactly 1 game out of the last 19 games. Let that soak in for a few seconds. It is easy to forget we were that bad. But in a lot of ways we were even worse.
At this time a year ago Ronnie (our only offesive threat) was coming off the worst injury of his career. They were saying he wouldn't be ready to play until week 4-8. And even then he would not resemble the Ronnie we saw the year before.
We had NO QB. It was down to Beck, a Rookie from MI, or a journeyman with a decent arm. We were two years at least away from having a QB to compete in the AFC east. I would have been hard pressed to find another NFL team in a worse QB situ than we were in.
OL, Carey was a starter, and there was a lot of people on here who thought Satele was good (I was never one of that group). Jake was an unknown rookie and Smiley was a servicable, but often injured LG. We had no RG and no backups.
WR was Ginn.....and we had just gotten rid of Marty Booker (something I wouldn't have done). We really didn't have much more, and nobody was convinced Ginn could be a number 1. (I still am not)
TE Randy McMichael was gone and Fasiano was nothing more than a backup as far as most of us were concerned.
How was this offense gonna put up ANY pts??
And if that was bad, the defense was even worse. We only had about 4-5 decent players and 2 stars. Both the stars were sent packing. The face of our franchise, Zack and JT were both gone. Bell was coming off an injury and Will Allen, Vonnie, and Channing were the only others you could really say were solid starters.
When you look at all of that, it is hard to imagine that this team was gonna win a single game, much less go 11-5. For TS not to win coach of the year still blows my mind. We were worse off this time last year than any expansion team ever.
OK now lets flip the calender over to this year. We are a team not coming off a 1 out of 19 regular season streak, but a 9 out of 10 regular season streak. QB ?? We have one that was 2nd in MVP voting and a backup who is pushing him for a starting spot, and a freaking 3rd string guy who figures to see some time on the field as well.
Ronnie is back and looking better than ever at RB. Ricky is playing solid and comes really cheap, and we have a solid FB and Cobbs is a solid number 3.
WR we have Ginn who has gotten better and Camerillo who was probably our best WR last year. We have Bess who is a solid slot and two rookies (neither of which I personally am sold on).
TE Fasino is a solid starter, Martin is a solid backup and we will have competion at tbe #3 spot.
OL is now a strenght of the team with only RG and depth being the concerns.
Our defense has Porter coming off his best year of his career, JT is back and both out DEs we drafted looks to be solid NFL players.
Our secondary has arguably the best saftey combo in the league, Will Allen at one corner and Eric Green, a good player in 07, and maybe the two best corners coming out of this years draft. Throw in Clemons and Culver and we have both a solid secondary and considerable depth and versatility.
When you stop and look at the whole body of work that Parcells and company have brought to the fins it goes beyond amazing. At this time last year I didn't care if NFL football ever got here. This year I am on Finheaven and Miamidolphins.com four or five times every day, just hoping to hear something new. I am so stoked.
I guess the point of the thread is to understand there are still pieces missing to the picture Parcells and co are trying to paint. There are still things I wished we had or things they could have done different. Don't look at what we are missing, look at how much we have improved in one short year. Do this for me, try and imagine the lions going 11-5 this year. Yeah I know, I can't either, yet what this team accomplished is that crazy. And it wasn't just a one hit wonder. It was a change of attitude. We are no longer a team hoping to win, we are a team expecting to win. We are a team that is GONNA win.
