Maybe not Matt Flynn, but I do wonder if the Dolphins have some other trick up their sleeve as far as a QB is concerned...perhaps someone that is a valuable backup right now and the team wants to make sure of two things before they part ways with him: 1) That their starter makes it through training camp before they send the backup away, 2) That the #3 guy takes the next step and looks worthy of being a #2 guy.
I had started to wonder if Green Bay fits that bill with Aaron Rodgers and Matt Flynn. They kind of do, but Graham Harrell is the #3 and I wonder if they'd really be comfortable with him as a #2. And they don't have a #4 on roster to bump up to #3, either.
The situation that really fits this line of thinking would be Tony Romo, Jon Kitna and Stephen McGee in Dallas. McGee is heading into his 3rd training camp and I think it's getting to be time that he bumps up to #2 or is dismissed. Meanwhile, Romo got hurt last year and I'm sure they want to make sure he gets through camp and preseason with no problems. They have a #4 on roster right now in Zack Eskridge, and so he would bump up to #3 if a trade were to happen. It all fits.
I'm not saying it SHOULD happen, but Tony Sparano has been very clear on one thing. Every time he's talked about Miami's QB situation, he uses qualifiers like "right now" and talks about how they're keeping their eyes open, etc. He practically affirmed that he'd have interest in Brett Favre. It doesn't take a conspiracy theorist to hypothesize that Sparano is holding a candle for another Pennington-type acorn to fall out of the tree and save his season. He's not failed to pass up a single opportunity to give Chad Henne a full vote of confidence. Even the Broncos have done that with Orton, though they went kicking and screaming the whole way. Sparano still refuses to do it with Henne. He insists Matt Moore is in competition with Henne, even though Moore just got a BACKUP'S contract on the open market.
I think it could happen...the Jon Kitna thing. I don't think it should, but it could.
