Yeah I know, and camp opens in 2 weeks. :) I am not parent, and wondered what those who are tell their kids when asked about things like bully gate with Cog, free Hernandez with Pouncey, etc and Jordan taking speed?

Today's kids, with tech, know a lot more than the past and are our future Phans. What do you tell them?

I don't depend on other people to raise my children, be they teachers,
professional athletes, or random people on the streets. Personally, my
three boys have never asked me about that sort of thing.

You probably shouldn't use the NFL as an example for your children to follow. This sort of stuff(DUIs, suspensions, etc.) happen for every team.

Sports players are not rolemodels and shouldnt have to be. Raise your kids yourself

Not saying kids should be raised with NFL role models. However, kids have to ask about Cog picking on players, Pouncey wanting to free a bad man, and Jordan taking drugs. How is that explained to very young Phans?

The only thing my dad told me about the Phins was don't bother rooting for them, they will never win.

That, by donating to a library, they've done a lot of good for the community and you just don't get how much of an impact they've had so they should be cleared of any supposed wrong doing.

If your kid is skeptical theres a perfectly legitimate response: flip a car.

You tell them the truth and don't sugar coat it. Every parent needs to have a talk with their kids about drugs, just like explaining the birds and bees to them. You also tell them that as long as you live under my roof, you will obey by my rules. If they want to do drugs, then they better find another place to live.

Roman has given good advice, again. Just tell them the truth. Dion Jordan issue is still a little opaque and may be harder to explain. He needed to get physically bigger and stronger and in the off season he put on 20 Lbs of muscle. However, the drug test detected a positive for a stimulant, adderall, which is on the banned list. While some players have problems with addiction to recreational drugs eg Josh Gordon and many others, the players that get caught on performance enhancing drugs are effectively trying to cheat the system. He is suspended for 4 games and he has denied taking steroids. However, he is taking his punishment like a man and hopefully learns from it.
The Incognito bullying, they will probably understand. It is likely that Richie has a mental health problem and has had it for many years. While he was a pretty good footballer, he is also probably a sociopath who enjoyed picking on others.
Pouncey wearing the hat, was just being a bit of a knucklehead. Aaron Hernandez had been a teammate and good buddy at UF. Mike and Maurkice wanted to show their loyalty to their old Gator buddy who was locked up in jail charged with murder (and is innocent until found guilty in a court of law). A really good lesson for your children is that by mixing with bad people, ones own reputation can become tarnished.

I agree with the statement that athletes shouldn't have to be role models but some can be. I live in Charlotte and although I am not a Panthers fan I plan on buying my boys Greg Olsen jerseys. We've run into him a few times in the community and I've never met a more approachable and sincere athlete or celebrity. He is top notch!

Do kids really try to "be" like athletes in life? I know I didn't. I wanted to play like Thurman Thomas, jerry rice, but I never once wanted to follow their leads. I looked up to my dad, uncles, cousins, older kids in the neighborhood. My parents always talked to me and my brothers almost as adults, no sugar coating, and I plan on being the same way with my son. Your kids will be more prepared for the world that way, I believe.

None of mine did. I've never had that conversation with my kids. I think that's some
cornball stuff someone made up.

Forget about the Dolphins. What about the recent Canes news? Absolutely disgusting. One of the lowest moments in the 40+ years I've followed that program. Much worse than anything associated with the Shapiro scandal.

I've taken some heat for posts I made on a couple of Canes sites but I wish I had gone further. It doesn't matter what may or may not have happened at Florida State. Deflective rationalization is beyond weak. I hope Miami recruiting is impacted negatively. Too bad this story didn't break before the NCAA finished its investigation. It's obvious the program is recruiting too many lowlifes and doesn't take enough steps to prevent it. The fact that it was two rapers changes everything. You can't dismiss it as one bad apple. Even the Sandusky situation was one perpetrator and then a lengthy cover up and bad decisions.

Besides, it couldn't have been a novice experiment. The players either had gotten away with it previously or were well aware of other friends/teammates who had done it. They posted videos of themselves not long after the assault -- unconcerned. They obviously knew which drug to administer, what the impact would be on the young woman, and how long it would take.

At USC I had several varsity athletes as roommates. I remember those parties very well. They would have at least 10-15 team members at our apartment and swap impaired stories of what they could get away with due to their status. At that point it was academic fraud. I'm convinced nothing has changed except the nature of the schemes.

Tell them that if you can't rule in your own household, you will never be a leader among men. Philbin failed in his home and he as failed miserably in the Miami Dolphins locker room. THESE ARE FACTS!!!
