What does Tannehill do poorly?

Based off of his camp and preseason work, what things are Tannehill doing poorly?

It seems like he is earning a lot of praise and looked pretty damn good to my untrained eye, I just wanted to hear from some of the scout type guys on this board regarding some things Tannehill is showing on tape that are poor habits that need to be improved drastically to be a good starter in the NFL.
 
You saw a glimpse of it on that 4th down against the Bucs, after the refs overturned the 2nd down touchdown pass. The Bucs lined up with matched numbers and good leverage, and Tannehill decided to lock in on a all covered Charles Clay, threw it late, and if Gaiter had just a microsecond quicker reaction he picks it, and it's his speed he likely takes it 97 yards for a touchdown.

Tannehill has a tendency to do exactly that.

Yeah I thought it was a strange play...its like he knew it was a bad decision but felt rushed and decided to chuck it anyways rather than eat a sack. I was a little bit surprised they didn't move him out of the pocket any down around the goal line where he could become a dual threat...I think they will do that in the regular season
 
Coming out of college the two throws that needed the most work was his deep ball and his throws to the middle of the field. All of the out cuts, come backs, wheels, screens and such he had down. The only really good ball he had to the middle of the field was the quick slant. All the throws where he had to account for multiple defensive players gave him trouble. He seemed to have trouble seeing all the moving pieces when throwing deep sq ins, drags or even skinny post, but he has made huge strides in this area. With no more starts than he had in college you would expect him to have trouble seeing the field but with time that will get better, and from what we saw in one meaningless preseason game he looked much more confident throwing to the middle.


He loves to throw the deep outs and has great timing on them and gets to show off his arm. I think most of his interceptions will come off of slants in his rookie year. He throws it so hard that you will get a lot of balls that are popped up off the WRs hands into the arms of a 2 deep safety.

He will need to continue learning the different ways NFL defenses disguise coverage, and where his checkdowns are once he is fooled. All he was seeing Friday was vanilla looks. I don't think you will really be able to see what he is all about until after his first 3 pick game.
 
I think he just needs to learn to make better decisions with the ball, such as when to throw it away. It looks like he is learning to make quicker reads, which is good to see. I think it's just going to take a little time and he'll probably make his share of mistakes early on. All in all, although I've been saying he needs to sit a year, I think he gets game action some time this season. The injury to Garrard, plus Moore not necessarily being a real good fit for the WCO puts Tannehill in play early I believe.
 
Tunnelvision. He locks on to his primary receiver and doesn't do a good job of his progressions. I think he will improve this and develop into a good QB, but right now, he is vulnerable to throwing a lot of picks once the veterans and DC's are motivated and gameplan him. It's not unusual for a young QB to have these issues, and they can be improved, but these are exactly the type of situations that lead to a lot of rookie mistakes.

I suspect he will develop into a good reader of the defense, and repetitions will improve his progression. He has the smarts, drive and work ethic to get there so I'm confident he will. But, he's still got a ways to go on that part of the game IMHO. Mastering his own offense is just the first step ... but he seems to have taken that one very well. He just needs reps, coaching, film and lots of practice to get good at it.
 
He sticks with his per snap reads to much......and sometimes he tips the other teams D off when he looks at the side/player he's going to before the play.....and not really sometimes, more like 1/3 of the time.

HE also likes to look at his 1st read, waiting, waiting and waiting for him to get open....something Chad was a real pro at and a big part of why he's no longer here.

I've been a draftnik for over 25 years and i can tell you he looks the part of a real NFL QB but i gave him a second round grade and think odds are VERY high he'll play that way but i'll hope for the best just like i did for Chad, who i gave a 3rd round grade to.
 
the ball sails in the air too long, giving the corner/saftey time to pick the ball off, that can be fix with coaching
 
He threw to his primary receiver every play. Its not a bad thing since they were open for the most part, but I'd like to see him under pressure and have to go through some options.

I saw the play a few times and to me it looked like he was looking for the slant on that side. He saw it wasnt open and then decided to throw the out but threw it late and it was almost picked for 6. But it didnt look like he just stared Clay down. I watched it a few times cuz it was one of only a hand full of not so good throws he made that game. If you have a chance to watch it again let me know if u noticed the same thing i did. Cuz at first glance i thought the same thing u did but then i noticed the slant run above and his throw just seem late on the out.
