Remember back when there was no free agency? Back when you had to actually take your time, and BUILD a team? When there was no way to 'quick-fix" a team, and you had to draft your players, teach them, and coach them the right way?
I remember growing up, watching teams like the Bills, the Broncos, and the Cowboys drafting their players, actually taking the time to develop those young men and watching them grow into the great players they would become...and in turn, watch those teams become the Champions they would ultimately be.
I grew up in Buffalo territory, and we would get our butts handed to us time and time again by that K-Gun offense, and as much as I HATED them (and the harrassment I would take each week at the hands of my brothers and sisters), I actually admired their team for the patience the front office (and the fans) had to build their team the right way. Man...thinking of the players that they drafted...and HIT on...Kelly, Reed, Smith, Thomas, Bennett, Hansen...the list goes on and on...The evaluated and chose well, then coached them into the great players they became.
I miss that era. Now, I know it'll never be the same. But it seems that every free agent we pick up somehow ends up hurting us more in the long run, then providing us with help. And I think every big free agent gives us, the fans, almost a false sense of hope that they are the missing piece of the puzzle.
Every year, the Dolphins are labeled a CONTENDER, and I think every team has to, at one time or another, even out success with failure. (The Niners are getting their taste of it now...) I wish I could say that, hey - these young guys that Saban has drafted the last couple years will really be the core of the team for years to come. but who knows? So far, Ronnie is relatively untested, and hasn't been able to show his total ability because of a porous line. Chris Chambers is in what should be the prime of his career, and is still a sort of anomoly...He looks awesome at times, and average at others...The same goes for McMichael. Who knows about Allen, Wright, and Roth? Crowder looks like he could be special, but disappears at times. I think of the talent the players show at times and think that, if only they could all show it at the same time, what a special team this could be..how they could be one of the greats...If only we could draft a couple of stud lineman, and add a couple of able mid-rounders, I think that would really put us in the upper echelon of the league. I want to be patient...I could live with a bad team for a couple of years...but they should show improvement. Look at the Colts, starting at 1-15 one season, improving the next. And they have become a top-tier, competitive team with real Super Bowl aspirations. The Cowboys did the same thing with Jimmy Johnson. Each year they got better and better, until finally the were at the top.
Hell, I'm just ranting and rambling....I know there really isn't any point to this. But it's just something I had on my mind, and guess I just wanted to express it. Thanks for listenin' all.
After all, we're in this together, right?
