What Fisher, Harbaugh and Flynn avoided

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross checked in Monday with thoughts on the team's quarterback situation.

There was nothing too earth-shattering from a news standpoint, but if you're a head coach or quarterback, these are the sorts of public musings from an owner that are unwelcome.
Ross' aggressive public style played a role in Jim Harbaugh and Jeff Fisher choosing NFC West teams over the Dolphins during the last couple offseasons, in my view. Separately, free-agent quarterback Matt Flynn was widely linked to the Dolphins through their new coach, Joe Philbin, but Flynn identified Seattle as his preferred destination.

Coaches in particular appreciate their owners leaving the football commentary to others. They don't want to feel public pressure from above, especially from owners without strong football backgrounds.

Also, don't miss out on Walker's negative point of view also: http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/42483/its-time-for-dolphins-owner-to-tone-it-down

Can Ross ever say anything and not have people dissect it into a negative story? It is also funny that this story went from Ross saying he thinks Moore will probably start to the video headline on NFL.com being "Moore to start week 1 for Fins".

The bashing of Ross and over analyzing of every little thing he says to make a headline is extremely old. I know myself and others who have taken exception to this lately are considered "homers" and people laugh when they hear that people think the media is out to get one specific team. I am actually starting to think that is indeed the case. Ross made some early mistakes and it seems that people want to keep up the image that Ross is this bumbling idiot that knows nothing about running a football team. There is a huge difference between flying to meet Harbaugh with Sparano still as head coach and him answering a question about who will start and saying he "thinks" Moore probably will. Yet both stories get just as many headlines and viewed almost the same.

I'm glad we "missed out" on Fisher and Flynn. STL are going to be a horrible run first team going 8-8 for the next decade, their draft was absolutely horrible too. Harbaugh would have been great but he was never leaving California - time to let that one go, an inexperienced owner made a mistake get over it for christ sake it was over a year ago.

How come they don't mention Ryan Clark? Was surprised considering they are taking a swipe at Miami for no reason because they have nothing better to write about. They'd better spend their time writing up articles about how exciting times may now lie ahead Miami with our new regime, but instead it's the same rubbish about how everyone hates Ross, everyone hates Miami, Tebow is God etc.

I wish someone would post on that worthless blog the fact that Carroll has opened the QB competition up and has not named the Seahawks front office franchise QB Matt Flynn the starter.. Reason being he is likely what most of us on the board and within the Dolphins organization believe to be true, a bad QB.. The fact is he has been the absolute most overrated QB in the league over the past 2 seasons.

What is new? We have a clueless owner? Semi-mediocre GM? Rookie NFL head coach? All these things are true, and we are quite frankly tired of hearing this. Up until the Dolphins win a series of playoff games then we will stil be considered a joke of a team.

I am one of the biggest Ross, Ireland critics, however even the biggest hater should have the nohow to admit both Ross's and Ireland's demeanor has changed, or seems to be changing...

players still need to make plays and coaches need the right players for scheme they run. owners have the money invested and as long as its not bad what they say so what

I'll give Mr. Ross the same pass I gave my Dad while he was alive. It's his show. I'll let him run it. I might not like it. I just hope he'll use the same good judgement he used in business that got him where he was. And translate that to football---- to get us all back to relevance.. And ultimately..... Champions ... Again.

Slow offseason eh bud?

It's not what Ross is saying that is the problem.

The problem is that he is SOOOOOO Eager to give interviews and say it. How many other NFL owners are giving interviews and proclaiming to the press what 'THEIR' Team is going to do?

Why not just have a camera and broadcast what you are doing for the rest of the NFL to see?

He is not the General Manager, he is not the Head Coach, yet he is INCREDIBLY keen to put his face on camera and speak for them. How many CORPORATIONS have majority owners that are the focal point of the CORPORATION?

It is very representative of what type of person he is. The wrong type of person to be the owner of this storied franchise.

Jerry Jones (One of the most successful owners to ever be part of a professional sport) does it. So do the Mara's who have won two superbowls in 4 years, who else... Irsay, who is more of a moron than Ross but until last year had one of the most successful teams in the league... Who else.. Kraft has been in the media his fair share of times...

Jones is the obvious one then Cuban. The Maras KNOW football and NEVER make statements like Ross is constantly making, besides they ARE the Giants. Kraft also does not constantly seek out the camera and speak for Bill Billicheck. He makes general statements.

Irsay has been in the NFL for decades he is not simply the majority owner of a team. He is in the media a lot more because Pollian screwed up so bad and they are completely in rebuilding mode now.

I am one of the biggest Ross, Ireland critics, however even the biggest hater should have the nohow to admit both Ross's and Ireland's demeanor has changed, or seems to be changing...

Peoples demeanors change daily, monthly, and yearly. You can't link their demeanor to anything but thin air at this moment. There is something call success, and no one is ever satisfied with staying at home in the post season. Neither of
them have any type of recent success with this team, and there is little indication that we are going to be successful this season. You seem to argue as if this change of demeanor is going to bring greatness, but you fail to realize that
actions speak louder than words. I applaud you for your blind faith, so called hater.

I don't see absolutely any change in Ireland's demeanor. He brought in Moore and it proved to be quite a good signing, didn't it?

Ross didn't have any nice things to say about Moore up until now. It is ironic that the same guy who wanted to make a big splash by bringing in a new QB is now standing behind the GM and the QB he took a public dump on last year.
