I know it is still very early and all, but with the way our offense is shaping, what formation do you see the Dolphins using the most this season?

Personally I think it will be something that WON'T include both RB's but will instead use more the FB and RB. I'm leaning more towards an I-Formation where Ronnie or Ricky will be used as a decoy on a play-action.

I sure hope that we don't use that double reverse that only worked once in the Denver game and never again could gain 1 yard..

We haven't acquired a pro-bowl FB in order for him to sit out most downs.

Talent wise we get the most talent on the field with the a 2 WR, TE, 2 RB set (assuming Ricky wins his appeal), but last year we were more productive with 1 RB and either 2 TEs or 1 TE and 1 FB. Beazley has more talent than our 2nd TE, so I'd say our base offence will be a standard 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 FB and 1 RB set. However, I still expect to see a fair amount of 2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB sets.

Without knowing too much about Mularky I'd also say we can expect far less shotgun formations simply based on Culpepper's superior talent over Frerotte.

Haha, Pauly, meet Fred Beasley... Fred Beasley, this is Pauly!

I agree with that thought, 2 wide, 1 slot, fullback, runningback, TE with alots of motion.

Wishbone ! I hope we do this on occassion. What fun that would be.

I actually don't think any one formation will dominate. The best thing about this coaching staff is we set our defense and offense up to take advantage of what is given to us. If one team is particularly good at stopping the run then we will spread them out a little more and then run. We cover our own weaknesses as best we can and take advantage of the other teams.

Agreed, however, the I-Formation is primarily a run formation, and though I know Mularkay will use DC more than Frerotte was used last season, I'ld like to think we'll be winning most of our games and thus the need to throw will be decreased...

It's not about the formation. It's about the personel grouping. The defense will try to match what our offense has placed on the field. The popularity in the use of the H back (often McMichaels roll) originates in an attempt to get coverage personel (corners) on the field to RUN THE BALL at the coverage personel.

When you see a single back set and an eventual run it was not an attempt to fool the defense by formation. It was an attempt to fool the defense with personel and POWER over them.

When you see a single back set and the game is dominated by the pass, it becomes obvious that the defense has chosen to defense the run via personel (linebacker).

There is no single player in the NFL that has illustrated this better than Rodney Harrison. While listed as a SS his coverage skills leave something to be desired. Jay Fiedler and Randy McMichael made a ***** out of him in 2004. Harrison plays the run as a linebacker and his coverage skills are better than the average linebacker. IMO, this WAS the key to New England's success. No team knew Harrison's role. There was no other player on that defense that attributed more to the success.

So what am I saying? As you watch the game count the eligible receivers from the either sideline. The majority of the game will be dictated by the following:

Find the third eligible receiver from the sideline (he is the same man counting from either sideline). The defender covering him should dictate whether we run or pass. If the defense has chosen to cover him with a linebacker we will pass. If the defense has chosen to cover him with a DB, we will run. If the OC isn't calling the game to those parameters the DC is defeating him.

Otherwise, the offense can choose to match up (DB's on Receivers) and attempt to defeat a team through TALENT.

Likewise, the offense can choose to match up (RB's on LB's) and attempt to defeat a team through TALENT.

Throw in a trick play or two and the above can describe just about every NFL game you will watch this year.

BTW: If the 3rd eligible receiver stays in for pass protection for the majority of the game, the offense has either met up with a superior D-line or your O-line simply sucks.........

i think the I form to. also some other 2 back sets. than ocasionaly we go 2te's b/c justin pelle can block really well.

Like Zod said, you have to change your offensive set to take advantage of what the defense is giving you.

And our 2 rb set didn't work well last year cause we almost ALWAYS passed out of it.

Agree with Hasta & Zod, our formation will be geared to what the defense is showing us. This is one of Bellicheck's best skills and Saban learned it from him.

In Saban We Trust!
