What happened to cutting Matt Moore?

I don't understand all the hate for Moore. He was the team MVP in 2011 when he kept us from having another 1-15 season. When he took over for Henne I think he went 6-4 after we started 0-6. A year later - and I was at the game - he came off the bench in the first quarter when Tannehill got hurt and led us to a win over the Jets. Last year he came off the bench and fired a couple picks - OK.

When I met Tannehill I reported back that he went on and on about what a great teammate Moore is and how genuinely supportive he is. That's got to be good for the health in the QB room.

Moore is a capable QB - he's proven that and should something happen to Tannehill during the year we can still win games w MM. I don't see other backup-worthy guys out there. Is he a little expensive? Sure. But is there a backup position more important? If we were cap-starved I get it but we aren't so I'm hoping he's our backup when the season starts.
 
I like Matt Moore, but a cheaper option could found in FA or the draft. Cap # is too big.

At this point we don't need a cheaper option so I am fine with keeping Moore.

Keep Matt Moore at this point. Still have plenty of CAP room and we are fortunate to have a back up QB that gives you a chance to win. If we run out of CAP room and need to look at this again later...so be it.
 
I find it amazing that Matt almost seems ok with being a career backup. This bodes well for the team and Tanny but I always thought that back ups are reserved for the older been there done that QB. Got to love that about him, no threat to Tanny unless he gets injured.
 
He is trade Bait when some teams starter goes down - Why kick him to the curb now? With all that cap sapce?

He might be the smartest guy at his position - catch a nice tan on the sidelines, make great money and still be able to walk at age 45!!!

I think you are right that RT was ailing in the last game. I'm not sure he should have taken the field after the Buffalo game. The odds are that your starting QB doesn't play all 16 games - something is bound to happen sooner or later unfortunately. Moore can win games - he's 7-4 in his last 11 starts and he does indeed have a great deep ball. Always did - remember early years tossing long ones to Steve Smith. Point is, he is more than a scrub backup. We keep this guy. Shula didn't back Unitas, Griese or Marino up w junk. He had Morrall (Joe Robbie HATED how much he had to pay Morral), Strock, Jaworski, Mitchell (yeah, I know), Kosar. Etc.
 
He was never going anywhere. I also think that if Tannehill has a bad stretch like he did last year they'll pull the plug on him and go with Moore.

Maybe he realizes that being a starting QB in this league is as much about perception as it is production. Matt Moore did more in 2011 that most first round QB's will ever do, and he has enough talent, touch, and athleticism to do what he needs to win games, but unless you become a big name, teams aren't going to sign you to be the answer at the position when front office's are as impatient as their fans in drafting their Qb of the future every 3-5 years. Almost every veteran (besides Peyton Manning) who has been signed to start in recent years has ended up just being a stopgap, and that gap ends up shorter than everyone expected unless they light the world on fire. He gets paid a reasonable rate, doesn't have to move, has more job security than he would have even if he were (probably briefly) "starting", and he's on a team that he likely feels good about his chances of success with when he gets a chance. It's just being realistic.

If the line doesn't improve and Tannehill suffers the inevitable major injury, maybe next year he steps in and does enough to show he's "the guy" for some team.

That's how I feel. It's not that I hate Moore, but better things could be done with the money.

I also don't think he pushes Tannehill at all, as no one seriously thinks Moore will start barring injury, or 4-5 bad starts in a row from Tannehill. Philbin did not seem to be a fan when he first took the coaching gig, and I'm not sure that has really changed.

Moore gained more yards on one pass than Tannehill had in three quarters in Buffalo. Yeah, he ended up throwing picks, but they weren't any worse than what Tannehill had done to that point. Perhaps that most crucial mistake Philbin made over the last two games was to force Tannehill back into action in Buffalo when his play could have been improved upon by a wide receiver playing emergency QB.
