I just read a bio on Dan Marino coming out of college and the scouting report said he ran a 4.9 40..........I know this isn't blazing but it isn't too bad for a quarterback really. So my question is (I only had the opportunity to watch Dan during his last 6 - 7 years) what was it that made his speed drop from 4.9 to 49? When I watched him there is no way he was that fast. Was it an injury or what?

he was fast in his early days, but he had a quick release, which was more deadly than running around. He wasnt really fast, but he could move around good on his feet.
he had a cannon, and he didnt need to run.
he had a lot of injuries during his career....knees, achilles, ankle.....they all may be minor, but they take a toll on you in years later

His knee injuries were mostly minor. But they add up after a while. I think he had 7 different knee operations. And the ruptured Achilles is not even close to minor. A ruptured achilles, at one time, was career ending. It wasn't until the late 80's early 90's that ruptured achilles could be fixed in such a way that would allow a player to continue his career. Marino lost a lot of strength in his legs, particularly the right leg (I believe). There was quite an accumulation of injuries that led to slowing him down. But he was always quick in the pocket and VERY quick at getting rid of the ball.
It seems like I read somewhere that Marino actually ran in the 4.7s coming out of high school. I could be wrong on that. But that sounds familiar.
