the phins went from being a team that always finished above .500 and always made the playoffs. now we can't keep a coach, are hard pressed to have a winning season, and haven't made the playoffs since '01. aside from dan the man retiring, what are reasons anyone can identify for the sharp and drastic decline over the last few years.

(fyi, the username is in reference to the bodybuilder, not the qb)

I blame it on bad drafts, bad coaches being brought in, and letting our team get old. :(

What happened?

Dave Wannstedt, then Rick Spielman.

Yes, Saban kicked us in the balls but he left the team in better shape then he found it.

It was bound to happen to us eventually. All teams go through a time where they suck for a while before finding a good coach. The Bengals, Pats, Chargers, and countless other teams have gone through their down years and these our just ours.

is it too late to bring back Jimmy Johnson?

I think this teams demise began with Johnson's final two years. His 98 and 99 drafts were absolute disasters. Patrick Surtain (98) was the only real quality player to come out of those drafts.

Then Wanny took over and "crap" did that guy love to just flush draft picks down the toilet. Two #1 for Ricky...no problem. You want next year's 2nd so we can have your 3rd this year...sure. This way we can draft Eddie Moore. You only want a 2nd for your 3rd string QB...ok. You want our 4th to move up one spot in the draft from 20 to 19...you bet.

Saban picked up right where Wanny left off. Sure we will give you our 6th to take Feeley off our hands. You only want a 2nd for your QB with 3 torn ligaments...hell yeah.

We really haven't had an impact draft since 1997. Despite Yatil Green being our #1, we were able to get Madison and JT with our next two picks. Unfortunately, "eight" years of GIVING away draft picks and BAD drafts have left have left this team with little talent and depth.

excellent post. That's why the reason Saban left : he was running scared. The sad part is Huizenga would've let him coach here probably for the next zillion years, but he was in over his head and his monster ego couldn't deal with it. Huizenga loved him like a son! How many owners take their coaches on vacation to Croatia. They lived 2 blocks from each other! Wayne defended Nick's quitting and remarked : you don't know complicated it is. There's more to it!" (without going into specifics, Wayne fueled the speculation...) You can only imagine the pain and anguish Nick's wife, Terry, must have went thru each day living in that 7 million dollar mansion on the ocean. The fear of dealing with home remodeling issues. The scariness of living 2 blocks from Huizenga. Could you imagine the neighborhood with all those massive yachts. Frightening.

not really, all the experts say he left it a mess, an aging defense, and absolutely no direction on offense, so to think we are better now than then is wishful thinking

you're right, bad drafts have killed this team. giving away picks like they grow on trees doesn't help either. the 4-12 season of a few years ago was tough to endure, but i'd almost rather go in a 2-3 year rebuilding phase, a la the titans, than piece together and old team each offseason that may get to .500. jt and zach can stay as long as they want, but the rest of the aging defense front 7, the majority of the secondary(w/ the exception of bell), marty booker, harrington, and the OL can go. give me draft picks, young players, and something to build on for the future. hopefully ronnie brown's prime will not be wasted.
