I want a GM who is going to give us an identity and have a long term plan in place.

We have a WCO and a 4-3 D. Draft & sign players who fit this system for the long term. Any coach hired afterwards has to fit into this system so that there is no constant turnover of players, thus building depth and consistancy throughout roster.

Dont just scout players, scout and evaluate coaches too. Anybody who follows soccer as you call it may know my local team called Swansea City (moneyball concepts). I read an article on them where they scout managers & coaches. They do this so that any future coach would have to fit in to their style of play and players they have already have at the club. Also they have a plan in place if any coach or manager leaves the club. We could do this in house and externally. Have in place, much like the Patriots do, 'an in-house coaching tree', where we have assistants ready to 'step up'. Ideally we would have ex players with an affinity for club, Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas (how he is not somehow involved baffles me), as position coaches, with the idea of promoting them through the ranks.

Have a roster in place before draft day. Every year, we seem to go into draft with a 'need' at a position, whereas teams like the Packers & Patriots seem to 'need help' in certain areas. This would allow us to attack the strength of the draft. Go in requiring depth so that it ties in to the strength of the draft. For example. Last years 1st round. The strength was considered to be along both lines. Teams atop of draft all needed Offensive line help, thus as expected, some players such as Sharrif Floyd, Star Lotulelei, Sheldon Richardson & Bjoern Werner, were expected to fall. Why then not tailor FA, so that our 'lack of depth' ties in with this need. We franchised Starks for £8.5m, when we already had Soliai & Odrick, whereas Andy Levitre OG for the Bills, was available for a similar amount. Surely Levitre & Lotulelei covered more needs than Jordan & Starks, short term and long term.

I want a GM who takes players who that dont 'surprise' me, i.e. Will Davis. Someone who takes players who drop due to combine, size or positional value i.e. Bjoern Werner, Keenan Allen, Zach Ertz, Larry Warford, Menelik Watson, Damontre Moore, Arthur Brown, Jarvis Jones, Manti Teo etc and drafts them on ability, much like Ozzie Newsome. Lotulelei & Werner were considered Top 5 before combine. All the above mentioned were 1st round picks before combine. Can you imagine, not having a 'need' and drafting 'football players' who have dropped due to results at combine. Just look at the draft we could have had in first 2 rounds. This is not 'hindsight'. I started a thread stating the same before draft and the year before regarding players like Russell Wilson & LeMichael James dropping due to size, while others like Luke Kuechly & David DeCastro due to position.

Dont overpay in FA much like Jeff Ireland now knows, it leaves a lack of depth at the backend of roster. Knowing Mike Wallace, Ellerbe, Wheeler & Dimitri Patterson will account for over $35 of cap space is sickening.

Thats what I want from a GM!

I'd love to be surprised with some gems. It seemed like whenever Ireland went away from the forum consensus pick it was for the worse.

I think a lot of these GMs tend to overthink it and try to get too scientific with their picks. You should know within minutes of watching just highlight reels if the player can be special then from there look for red flags. This is what worries me after reading that article about Farmer, because what seems to set him apart is his work ethic. I'd almost rather have a guy like Marino who might make the pick more on instinct than the guy that spends way too much time thinking about minute details like arm length or pinky strength.
