I would release both Jeno James and Kevin Carter prior to Mar 1st. This would allow us to split both their dead cap in two. Between 2007 and 2008. With James this clears $2mil and with Carter this clears $4mil.

We can use the money cleared by both of these as well as a few restructures of contracts like Mckinney's, Zach's, Mare's...etc to help re-sign Holiday, Bowens, Barnes, Lemon, and Bell.

I would then wait until Draft Day to use both Booker and Harrington in draft day trades. Like moving up from the top of the 4th round into the bottom of the 3rd...and so forth.

Booker will also clear $3.1mil and Harrington almost $2mil to help make up for some of our signings we did prior to the draft like a WR (Stalworth) and maybe a CB (Samuels/Clements) or OLB (Thomas).

At #9, I would select Levi Brown. At #39, I'd select either an OLB (Woodley, Poluzsny, or Moses) if we signed a CB via FA...or a S (Merriweather) if we signed an OLB via FA.

Then, I'd draft either a KR/PR like Higgins at #72 or a C/G like Mozes. Of course, we can use our 4th round and say Booker or Harrington to move into the bottom of the 3rd round...that would maybe allow us to get both those players.

And whatever's left over BPA. Comments?

If we draft Ginn in the first round then I would be okay with parting ways with Marty. I still think he is a solid #2, but Ginn just might be one of those guys we can't afford to pass up on. Harrington must go, he is horrible and I think most would agree with that. I don't think it's entirely necessary to part ways with Marty, but at the right price and situation, I would pull the triger.

IMO Booker is the best WR on this team. i would not get rid of him under ANY circumstances. besides, your mock solution there doesn't solve for the hole we'd have at his position by trading him away for other positions

Well, in my scenario I have Mueller signing Stalworth...so I see Chambers, Stalworth, Hagan, Higgins (3R), and Vick as our WR corps. So dont see the need for Booker and do see the need to clear his $3.1mi.

stallworth would cost more than 3.1 mil, plus you'd have a signing bonus.

so how does that work?

I'd take Booker over Stallworth so I guess that's the flaw I see in the scenario. Stallworth has underachieved and been injured for most of his career. I'll pass on him at this point.

Yes, it does. It has us signing Stalworth to be our deep threat #2 WR and drafting Higgins to be our #4 WR/KR/PR.

sorry but Stallworth would cost more than Booker and isn't an upgrade... you are overpaying for a deep-threat. i think the money could be better used somewhere else.

i also don't like assuming that a guy like Higgins could successfully do what you anticipate him doing.

Easy. The $3.1mil cleared by trading Booker on Draft Day, plus the $20 some odd mil we'll have of cap space?

but that still doesn't solve the fact of why you'd get rid of booker in the first place? Stallworth would cost more than Booker any way you slice it. if you are using Booker's dead cap space money to pay Stallworth, it is like paying someone to rob a bank.

again, i don't think Stallworth is an upgrade over booker so that is probably why i don't agree. I might be open to doing that trade scenario with Chambers and getting Stallworth, as he'd be cheaper and basically the same thing only faster

Um, Mueller has expressed interest in Stalworth. So, sorry Mueller doesnt see things as you do.

Then, with Lelie, Curtis, and Bennett on the market, the deep draft for WRs, and his hamstring injuries...will push his value down some.

Booker doesnt have dead cap space. We clear the full $3.1mil. Stalworth will not get more than a $5-6mil signing bonus and cost no more than $2mil against the cap in 2007. Its called "knowing how to manipulate the NFL salary cap"?

one could only hope. Did you see what Givens got last year? unfortunately Stallworth may be looking at that and setting that as the benchmark. Being that he is the most attractive FA WR right now, he'll command the biggest payday.

and again... i really like Booker. I honestly think he is our best all-around WR on this team.

i don't mean dead cap space as in unusuable... i'm saying that donte isn't cheaper - but you are using the money that would have paid booker to pay him... so you're NOT saving money.

what's more, if you think stallworth will cost "no more than" $2 mil against the cap, you are kidding yourself. he will probably be asking for something around $4 mil a year.

Also, Mueller wants speed at WR. Booker and Welker are goners, sorry. Only Chambers, Hagan, and Vick will be here next year that are on the roster this year...and we'll replace Booker and Welker with Stalworth and Higgins.
