Ever since Shula, have you noticed that Jimmy Johnson, Dave W., and now Saban all seem to have that deer in the headlights look on their face? Especially in the face of a loss or a game-changing play, which are becoming increasingly frequent.
I don't know how to explain it, but I'm sure that most of you know what I'm talking about. It's a confused "brook trout" look (as someone else in this forum pointed out) that certainly doesn't give me as a fan any confidence that the coach has things in control.
I noticed it with Jimmy Johnson first. Things would go badly, and he'd start having this look on his face like "Woe is me!" It got really, really bad under Wannstedt, and now I notice it in Saban more and more.
I'm trying to put my finger on the feeling I get when I see this, but all I can come up with is "helplessness and despair," like a little kid who never gets anything to go his way and wants to cry. I have to say that I never saw that look from Shula, and if it makes me feel helpless and disgusted, how do you think it makes the players feel?
You'll never see coaches like Parcells, Bellicik, Marvin Lewis, Mike Holmgren, and a host of other coaches that are considered very good making those faces and I just wanted to point that out and get you guy's opinions. Any thoughts? It just doesn't instill confidence to me.
