I am curious...........who will start in our secondary Thursday night?? Is Daniels' ankle healthy? Is Allen good enough or did he miss too much training camp.

In my opinion, I don't feel very good about our draft pick on Allen after watching him in the preseason. Now I know he missed most of camp, and he's just a rookie, and we haven't even played a game yet, but all I saw out of him was that he is very very fast. Unfortunately speed can't make up for poor decisions on the field, so can someone please convince me I'm just being paranoid about him????

I'm just wondering if we should have taken Jimmy Williams with our draft pick back in April, that's the guy I wanted.

CBs are Will Allen and Andre Goodman
Safeties are Hill and Tillman

Allen was a good pick just give him some time. He has the ability to be utilized like the safety we're playing Thursday.

This is my point exactly....

This doesn't seem like a very good secondary at all does it??? Or am I jumping the gun a bit??

I know most people will tell me to let them play before passing judgement but I am usually right when it comes to evaluating players and I have a sneaky suspicion us fin fans will be cussing the secondary every Monday morning.

I have high hopes for Will Allen. You can't teach speed, but Saban can teach coverage.

Goodman has impressed in camp and preseason. You can tell Saban loves his DBs who can tackle on the perimeter, and the trade of Madison for Allen and acquisition of Goodman proves it.

Renaldo Hill seems solid. Tillman, though, I question. Bell seems like the better playmaker at the position, and I was excited at his play towards the end of last season.

i think our secondary takes a big step forward this year, they were good in the preseason minus the backup's in the jacksonville game, but the beginning of the jags game, the dolphins secondary was all over the jags wr's

and dont forget the pressure that will cause a lot of poorly thrown balls

I feel very comfortable with Tillman...He is very agressive and has good instincts....Remember that preseason game against Carolina where he jumped the receiver's route and almost intercepted Jake Delhomme...

I feel very comfortable with our starting Secondary, especially once Daniels is back and Goodman is the third DB, but, our depth is what is concerning right now. If anyone goes down, we're in trouble, but I feel very comfortable with the starters, be it Daniels or Goodman. They all showed tremendous run support ability in the preseason, something we haven't had around here in a long time. As good as Surtain and Madison were, they were not very good in run support.

Madison was putrid in run support, but Surtain was very good. I don't know what exactly would make you say or think he wasn't good in run support.

:nono: I keep getting suckered into these damn threads. I open it thinking it might be a legitimate question only to find a Jason Allen bashfest. When will I learn not to trust subject headings?

Again, it only supports my previously mentioned theory that the only reason people truly have to bash Allen at this early in the game is that they wanted someone else in the draft. Well, that's what you get for only considering one player in the draft. Unless you are a draft guru, nine times out of ten you will probably be wrong when it comes to later first round picks, and even they get it wrong a lot. Why set yourself up with those kind of odds? Why not just come to terms with the fact that Saban probably knows a little bit more than you, even without Madden and NCAA videogames.

Also, since a rookie's preseason is apparently all that is required for an assessment, what in the hell has Jimmy Williams done? Wasn't he on the field when they were torched by Green Bay? Didn't Cassell put up 230 yards against them in the first week? Must be all Williams' fault. What a bust.

i dont think madison or surtain were bad at run support.. madison sometimes would get carried for a couple yards but he did make some good tackles on RBs and usually got them down.. i dont think "putrid" really does him justice he played for us for a long time

Secondary at the moment is our weakest unit on the entire team in my opinion.
I'm fairly sure that Allen won't start but he will come in on some packages in obvious passing downs.

I don't necessarily want Allen starting in this game, he needs to stick with minimal packages and playing time. It's not that I don't think he isn't or won't be a good player, but I don't think he has grasped the system well enough to be an asset rather than a liability in the 1st game at this point in time.

I miss Pat Surtain, although Matt Roth (taken using the pick we traded for) looks promising.
I'm sure there's going to be rough sailing ahead, but things will eventually settle down.
