The palm beach post article i just read was suggesting that he is interested in playing for the dolphins next year, first why would jax not have him start and get rid of leftwich, second is he even a free agent

I didn't know he was a free agaent but Jacksonville is going to have to keep one of those quarterbacks and they more then likely push to bring Garrard back.

The Jags let Garrard explore options last year before resigning him.

I don't remember anybody seriously wanting Garrard.

Please not Garrard

NOt another QB who wants to run. Can we just have another drop back QB who can think and is a great pocket passer. When will everyone learn a QB is more than just a great athlete!!!!

I prefer Garrard over Scarington. And I said so before Harington was signed. Then again, I also preferred Jamie Martin (no draft pick necessary). :) Harington is improving though. He played well vs. Detroit.

"Here is my revised list (02-22-2006, 01:52 PM).
Rank Player Career Rating
1 Chad Penington 92.1
2 Daunte Culpepper 91.5 (Not Free)
3 Jeff Garcia 85.8
4 Drew Brees 84.9

5 David Gerrard 83.9 (Not Free)
6 Jamie Martin (U) - St. Louis 81.9
7 Tim Rattay 81.6
8 Kliff Kingsbury (U) - NY Jets 79.2

1,2,3,4 have Injury concerns... You better have a backup with any of these guys.
I'd rank them 1-Culpepper, 2-Brees , 3-Penington, 4-Garcia.
Penington has serious injury concerns, but might be a nice backup to bring in and compete. I'm not a Jeff Garcia fan, but he's statistically a better QB than Frerotte. More mobile as well.

5,6,7,8 - The ranking seems fine. No injury concern. Gerrard seems to have the most upside. All seem to be an upgrade over Rosenfels... lets bring in some competition.
You could keep Frerrotte, and target any of these guys as a backup QB. Any of them could probably beat out Frerrotte in Training Camp."

Very interesting. After watching the game yesterday, I was convinced that we lost the game because of poor QB play and inconsistent defense. Having watched the game again today -ugh! Call me a masochist but I can't help but watch the games twice. Even after a loss- I have a fresh perspective. Joey did indeed play pretty horrible, and the defense was a little soft on a few plays, but something that I overlooked the first viewing was how well David Garrard played. His performance was the primary reason we lost the game.

He consistenly made big plays throughout the game. His decision making was excellent, he made some incredible throws and fantastic runs, showed poise, and kept his teamates relaxed. It was the best Qb performance I have seen against the Dolphins this year.

The Miami front four was getting good pressure on Garrard -he took some very hard hits-and he continued to thrive. Although the defense was pressuring him, he never got rattled, and never made the big mistake. The Dolphins played a significant amount of time in the nickel and dime, still got good pressure on Garrard, yet he consistenly made the right read and beat the defense. Very impressive.

At the beginning of the season, I'm sure that the Jags were looking at Leftwich as the future of the franchise. He was receiving praise from everyone. He played very well in the first three games. He then started to struggle a little, and shortly after, unfortuantley got injured.

Following the injury, there were rumours that the Jags were going to try to unload Leftwich. His salary cap numbers and performance, however, are said to make any movement very difficult.

I have only seen Garrard play a handfull of games, but they have been over the course of the last three years, and I have been impressed. He reminds me a little of a younger Steve MCNair-great athletic ability, good leadership qualities, and the most important quarterback quality: poise.

We have a fair amount of money tied up in the Qb position right now, but more importantly, we have a lot of intangible commitments/costs to DC; we traded a high draft choice and his injury hasn't fully recovered. I think it would be somewhat difficult to change direction concerning the QB position provided that DC is healthy next year.

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if Saban has a look at Garrard. The problem, however, is that he is signed through 2008, and I think the Jags will also be looking very closely at Garrard, and may decide that he is the future of the team, and that Leftwich is expendible.

"We have a fair amount of money tied up in the Qb position right now, but more importantly, we have a lot of intangible commitments/costs to DC"

Harrington is basically guaranteed $3.5 mil next year... and then he is gone. The 3rd year is an "unguaranteed" $10 million. The dolphins will either have to extend his contract, or cut him.

As a Jags fan, I would rather have Garrard. He works better with our line than Byron Leftwich. As a passer though, Leftwich has the arm. I hope we trade Leftwich. He will work in a system that has a line better geared for pass blocking than run blocking.

I think that it's far more likely that Joey restructures. I don't think that he's shown enough to the rest of the NFL that he can be a franchise QB, and I don't think anyone will be calling him to start for their team. He may get backup offers, but he's here in Miami, we have a system he likes, and he's in a situation where he'll be called upon to play in games. I think he signs for 3 years as our backup, at a marginal cost to the team, and then floats around the league for a couple more years before retiring.
