What is the major reason behind the decline of the defense?

Well this is one Dolphins fan that agrees with you. Bottom line most important stat is wins and losses. That stat says 7 - 9 last season. It was done with smoke and mirrors on defense. I'm still waiting for the D to cover a TE. Tony Gonzalez shredded them in the first game last year. Pat's tight ends went off in the first game this year. Go thing they only play 4 quarters otherwise Brady and the TE's would still be scoring points.

The Atlanta game you are referring to was in 2009. We played the Bills in week 1 last year...

i wonder who was one of if not the main guy saying this defense was overrated off of last season and we couldn't stop any top offense...oh yeah...this guy

as for what i'm seeing this year we don't have anyone still to take pressure off wake and we're playing a lot of soft off coverages which require quick rush pressure for success or get chewed up with personnel who frankly fit more pressure in your face cover skill sets

i think nolan expected more pressure than he's gotten or at least more consistent pressure and has been slow to adjust...but adding jason taylor he should have frankly saw this coming...it wasn't enough...biggest issue i see is no pass rush one on one win guy opposite cam wake to take heat off and help our coverage guys out...there's absolutely nothing in the cupboard to help us there and no line up and challenge of guys in coverage at the los especially at te...way too many guys getting free releases to go any way they want

good defenses force turnovers, we cannot force turnovers if our life depended on it, we need to find defensive players that can force turnovers, hopefully gruden, fisher, or cowher find those guys

Maybe Minnesota last year. It was a big spot in the game anyway, not really in the season.
ya, we have it here and their, but im talking about mainly like, game on the line, say we are up by 2 pts, other teams driving. when was the last time we forced a turnover in like a do or die spot during the game?

i mean last year sean smith had an int during the cincy game to finish it off, but if i remember correctly we were up by a td anyway, so even if they hadnt forced a turnover, as long as we held them to anything but a td, we win the game.

its hard to force turnovers when the qbs got the time to make a sandwich before the ball comes out of his hand...i think we do have guys who can make plays on the ball in coverage but its hard to play off a man as much as we do or trail all the time and make plays on the ball...it looks like we try to play a bend but don't break scheme and eventually the pass rush will get there to get us off the field...ie wake

but its not working

I really feel Clemons would benefit us greatly. He was atleast always near the damn ball. And I do think Crowder's aligning is true, but tell me, why can't Dansby be a smart enough player to do that? Dansby needs to make more of an impact imo, and wtf happened to Burnett from the pre-season to now?!

But yeah someone made a good point, they did tend to have key mishaps in the clutch last year. I remember against the Browns, Carroll had a gimme pick 6.

I really don't know if Nolan changed something or what, but our coverage looks sloppy this year. I feel like Vontae and Smith have regressed a tad, but what the hell, when the play so far off, thats taking away both of them in what they're better at you know?

I think the issues start with Soliai.

Last year he played out of his mind, had a great season. MUCH better than anything he had done in prior years.

This year he has fallen back to what he was before last year... I don't know why, but he has not sustained the growth he showed last year.

The 3-4 front cant be successful without a NT that can hold his ground against a double team.

i just got done rewatching the chargers game and watching the defense we missed a ton of tackles and on a lot of the ones we did make the guy went forward after contact for another 3 yards...it honestly looks to me like these guys on d minus a few individuals have quit.....and it was only week 4

and the opposition continuously runs things that befuddle our lbs and secondary...looks to me like dansbys playing hurt...this doesn't look like the karlos dansby of last year...and kevin burnett i don't know whats goin on there...looks like a took the bait again on a player being a big difference maker in the damn preseason...i still think the scheme sucks but the players aren't doin their parts either...

jimmy wilson looks good for those that care...we need to get him on the field more and take the good with the bad while he learns...

we're missing so many tackles i wonder if the guys are in pads enough in practice...

Lack of talent and no playmakers. Plus, LB positions is lacking. And the secondary regressed. To me, it's better off if the Dolphins starts young players and trade for picks by Week 9.

Apparently Clemons >>>>>>> Jones and Crowder >>>>>>> Burnett. I'm sure we all expected Burnett to be way better than crowder, and if you didn't you had no statistical evidence. This site was full of Rashad Jones fanboys because of his ability to make the big play, which he hasn't even come near. Clemons getting limited action and still hurt, doesn't help us. Vontae being down is absolutely huge, nolan carroll has been on opponents best WR many times and has gotten torched. Also a 7th round rookie is out there covering the #1s. I would bet theres no team in the NFL that has their 7th round rookies or UDFA covering #1 WRs in clutch moments or at the end of games. Not a knock on Wilson, hes played good since he's been here and I think hes a good player but I mean come on.

Lets say Vontae isn't hurt, Clemons isn't hurt, and Burnett didn't play like the worst ILB in the NFL... I still believe we'd be maybe a little better than the 20th ranked D but no where near the top, but not as close to the bottom.

burnetts not the worst ilb in football...he's all around the ball he's just not making plays...and in the run game he's firing up into the wrong areas and the backs are hitting other holes...he's frustrating no doubt

the loss of vontae is huge no doubt about that...people can say he gets beat for a big play a a game and maybe thats true cause he still has all those damn mental lapses that drive me crazy but with him not there the opposition is not afraid at all to go to their #1 wr...they are attacking the hell out of it...and watching carroll he's missing assignments like crazy and frankly continues to look disinterested...i'm losing patience with him ever playing up to his potential...he looks like he's going thru the motions
