i can't comment on his schemes so much, as a fan all i can do is evaluate what i felt i saw out of this defense since he's been here:
1. clearly we were great against the run
2. we were horribly unreliable against the pass.
3. folded up on the important 3rd downs more often than not.
4. certain games the defense couldn't close.
Having said all that, nolan did a lot from the last joey porter year (as i call it) to the next.. and it really was a HUGE turn around. maybe this year he didnt have the best unit to start off, i just don't like the offseason excuse, because everyone dealt with that, and he wasn't a brand new coordinator. he had a year to prepare for that.
we contribute alot of the early problems this year to vontae davis being out. excuse. sean smith wasn't super impressive, but he did better then i would have thought when really called upon. should our defense slip that much from 1 player being out? that to me says that jeff ireland and co. did not put enough stock into his defense
( which i understand they felt it was good enough to ignore for a year and focus on offense)...
but there were clearly problems with the secondary from day 1 as far as depth was concerned. for the kind of defense nolan was running we really needed better play out of our safeties and 1&2 corners. and to be prepared if one went out... we werent. i blame ireland, not nolan for most of this by not giving him everything he needed to succeed. he was on the verge of producing and elite defense and then they pulled the rug out. they also never gave him the help on offense he needed. period.
