Now that we have our new OC I was wondering what kind of QB he will be targetting in the off season. We know that Frerotte has been asked to restructure, and now his knowledge of Linehan system is no longer needed. Of course Gus has been around for a while and could easily pick up the new system. The question is: Does coach MM likes a strong arm Qb, or does he prefer a mobil Qb?
There are several options out there:
1. Bringing back Frerrote and have him groom a rook (Croyle, Whitehurst?).
2. Bring in an UFA, somebody like Josh McCown from Arizona for example.
3. Move up in the draft to try to get Jay Cutler.
4. Trade for somebody elses Qb. Maybe involving Ricky and some draft picks.
5. Promote Lemons. And bring in a capable back up.

What do you guys think?

mm tailors his offense to his personnel, so there really isn't any prototypical qb in his system.

He likes Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox

That basically answers the question. He's had 2 guys that were stiff as boards (Maddox and Bledsoe) and 2 guys with mobility (Stewart and Losman). My guess is that he likes good quarterbacks.

Keep Gus, sign McCown, and draft a QB in the 3rd.

that'd be a mess waiting to happen.

frerrottes good enough to manage the game. McCowns got talent but hes dumb. and the QB we draft could be good enough to start right away, but we couldn't actually start him.

jay cutler. keep a vet around to start for another year, be it gus or an UFA, maybe even sage who knows.

there still remains the possibility that we can get cutler without having to move up in the draft. the only teams ahead of us really looking for a qb are the jets, the saints, and the raiders. if one of them goes with another prospect or signs a veteran FA (oakland has a ton of other talent on O, they might want to sign a vet and take a shot right now, we've all heard that culpepper is trying to get out of minnesota, etc etc etc) we could get cutler without moving up. i know its a longshot, but since when has a fins fan been opposed to pipe dreams?

How is that a mess?

3 teams? the raiders? they drafter Walter Jones last year in what the 3rd?

Heres my opinion of teams in front of us who needs a QB

Lions-JG and JH, need i say more, and they may not take one
Cards-who knows what green would do...dont think hes happy with josh
Saints-Aaron Brooks?
Titans-They will only take a QB bc of who is available, not bc they need one. I think they are happy with Volek

If the jets drafted a QB in the first round, imagine how much cap space will be wrapped up in QBs

I think the most obvious statement we can make is that he likes QBs who don't actually play the position. You can bet Marty Booker will get his share of attempts on unconventional plays. If anybody else on the O has a decent arm, they'll get a couple as well. If there is some mid-round Matt Jones or Antwaan Randle El type of player, he might be a good pickup for the team.

Mike's never had a really good QB in his experience as an OC or head coach, so it's really unknown. He likes to run a base run offense with a vertical passing flair. He also likes gadget and utilization of certain skills of his people. An example would be the way he used Kordell's athleticism in various forms as a reciever, runner and passer in various sets...He also likes to use his TEs a lot, which should make RM very happy.

It's interesting because a guy like Brees or Rivers would fit well. But I doubt we'll be going that route. I think Saban would rather fill in a few of the more obvious holes, other than QB, before he makes a move for a major FA QB or drafting an elite FA prospect. He could be looking at an Omar Jacobs in the second round with a Gus as a fill in until he's ready...

Anything but Number One.

Even number freaking five.

There is no part of me that harbors the illusion that Cleo Lemon will lead us to the Superbowl... but I KNOW that Gus won't.

We gain absolutely nothing by starting Gus next year. Nothing. If we want to throw a season away, then start somebody young and let them prove they're bad, too.

Luckily, I think Saban knows this.

We will bring in a FA and draft a project.
