I really want to know something. But before I ask for your opinion, I ask for just one small favor:

DO NOT MAKE THIS THREAD INTO A GUS VS. AJ THREAD!!!!!!

Ahem.....:)

We all know a deep ball is a very long pass (duh....). So tell me, how far does a QB have to throw for a pass to be considered a deep pass. I really want to know, because AJ's been criticized for not being able to throw a deep pass, and yet he threw for a 36 yard pass last game. And we all know Gus can throw a deep ball. So how far, is far for a ball to be deep?

AJ has plenty enough arm strength to throw the deep ball - he just doesn't have the accuracy or timing. Gus lives by the theory that his WR will out play the DB for it. I personally like Gus's method right now with the WR's we have - but if AJ can get consistent with his long ball - or atleast ATTEMPT a few - he could be deadly.

*Sorry didn't mean to turn it into an AJ vs Gus thread - I didn't read your post well enough and thought you wanted to know the difference between the two.

It's all good. At least it was unintentional.

I think everyone might have their own opinion on what they consider a deep pass. I think anything over 35 is a deep pass.

Gus is better than AJ. Like that reasoning?? For real,IMO a long pass is over 25 yards but it's also a pass where you're trying for a TD in many cases. If done well it keeps the safetys from sneaking up in the running game so it's a very important devise for the offense. Just look at how the Colts do it.

Why is frerotte making such a stink about saban's decision to wait? he's a career backup but was given a real opportunity to take the starting job. Excuses aside: (dropped passes, wrong routes, pass rush, timing, knowing the system better than everyone else, goimg against the other team's "first") his accuracy and passing rating has plummeted and he has not played like a starter. I'm not a feeley fan but come on Gus, butch up!

Mod Note: Did you not see the thread-starter's simple request in the first post?

Just because I guy has arm strength doesn't necessarily mean he is a good "deep" ball thrower. Plenty of guys can chuck the ball 70 yards but without any accuracy. Also, in the right offense, a guy with an average arm can throw a good deep ball - Marc Bulger for example, their offense puts him in the position to throw deep and he is real accurate so he makes up for the lack of arm strength by being able to anticipate where the wr is going to be and put it there

the most important part of the deep ball is getting it over the CB/Safety... so youd rather an overthrow than an unintentional underthrow... so at least gus has been ok with that on his long balls... but still i dont give a **** how far you can throw it, if you cant lay it over the top of a CB/Safety and into your WR, its pointless...

I think a deep ball is anything over 25 yards from scrimmage. A quick slant that goes for 80 yards is not a deep pass.

The key to the deep pass, in my opinion, is getting height on it. That enables the receiver to adjust his stride and get to the ball. Jeff Blake used to have about the best deep pass i've seen. Early in his career in Washington, Gus threw a great deep pass, but I haven't seen it here. As great as he was, I never felt that Marino threw a very good deep pass. He was good on the 25-30 yard lob, but was never very accurate at greater distances.

Billy Volek also throws a great deep ball, but apparently he doesn't have the arm to be a starting Qb according to many GM's. I wish we would have gotten him instead of AJ, although I am a FF.
