What makes a good Corner?
A good corner is productive vs. the pass
Defending the pass is the lifeline of a corner’s game
A good corner will always be within arm’s length of the receiver (in-phase)
Has to have the confidence to play on an island and forget a mistake
Cannot go under the tank
The average corner will go under the tank
All good corners are selfish and ****y
Being a turd isn’t always a bad thing at this position
There are no great humble corners
If they are too nice they’ll get beat
You need a fire
You need to be focused and be able to concentrate
Has to have the right mental outlook on every snap
Cannot get bored
4 Balls will determine the outcome of a game, can’t have lapses there
Need excellent athletic ability and instincts
Must have good ball skills downfield
Must be able to locate the ball downfield
If you run fast and can’t finish, watch out
If they don’t have instincts now, they won’t get them later
Always take guys that make plays with instincts and ability
Should be a decent tackler, not a killer but can get guys on the ground
Should play a physical game with the wideout, can’t let a wideout get comfortable
WIdeouts hate getting pushed off their route, you can get in their head
Small corners with exceptional skills can still play in the NFL (Grimes)
They are just as good as the big guys
A good barometer for a corner is how often does he get his hands on the ball
Bat downs, tips, INT’s
Take best 2 seaosns rank #of INT, PBU and rank top 15
Small corners with only good skill-sets get beat
3[SUP]rd[/SUP] corner’s are starters nowadays
If a corner doesn’t start for you but is excellent on special teams still a lot of value there
7 most important things to look for
1. Instincts
2. Foot quickness
3. Hips
4. Acceleration/ catch up speed
5. solid tackler
6. confidence/ mental toughness
7. Ball skills
Dropped INT’s are killers

What makes a good Safety?

Production vs run and pass

Can’t afford to mess up

You can dominate from this positon ( Chancellor)

You have to be a smart player

Takes great angles

Not fooled by play-action

You cannot win with a dumb safety

Have to make all the calls, help CB’s and LB’s

Have to be a tough player

There are no good soft safeties

Lose with dumb guys and soft guys

Must have good cover skills good safety should be able toopen hips and turn and run

Can cover backs and tight ends

A safety that is just average vs pass must be exceptional against the run

Box safeties aren’t worth taking anymore

A free safety should have the cover skills similar to a corner

A safety must be part of the special teams units

Very important to look at the background of safeties on special teams

If you’re scouting a safety you need to see if he’s ever covered a kick before and if he has you need to watch that tape and see how he did

Another nugget: What do they do with the ball in their hands off interceptions and fumbles? The play only starts once you get the ball

Good stuff....especially when considering guys who could transition as well as looking at how a guy has played both positions. For example...I think Eric Rowe is my top FS...he might play corner in the pros and have some success but at S I think you have a potential star.

I've also heard some talk about Byron Jones to S

if eric rowes a corner i think it's cover 2 corner...that i can see...i dont like him for us though

I like him...but you also have to remember that was his first year at CB. He was playing purely off instincts and athletics...the technique and nuances weren't there yet. As you like to say there's a lot of meat on the bone haha.

That said I still like him better at FS. He's going to get drafted way higher than people think IMO..might not even make it to 47

He doesn't have the foot quickness or hips to play corner in our defense... or any for that matter. Didn't give him a draftable grade.

I'm going to have to agree to disagree on this one. He had a 6.70 3 cone...and that quickness and COD direction is all over his tape. Not-draftable...I mean wow that's a stretch. Wouldn't surprise me to see him sneak into round 1. I'd give him a solid 2nd round grade at S...probably 3rd at corner

Heavy feet and tight hips

FWIW I watched 2-3 tapes and wasn't impressed at all. Solid ball skills though.
