Saban did good in the college ranks, he did not do good in the NFL (as an example)

I am asking for help from those of you who watch college football and maybe have some ideas of why Harbaugh will be good for us. Without Luck would Harbaugh have been able to turn Stanford around?

We got burned last time we thought a college coach was worthy of the pro game right?

to be honest i dont watch college often but Stanford looked pretty good last night

I agree with the OP; he seems to be the sexy name all of a sudden, but when does the college to nfl thing really work, especially when the college coach's success came with a consensus #1 in the draft QB?!

If Saban had got Drew Brees he would have been a great NFL coach. Instead, ..........we all know what happened.

You can get Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh, Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher, Don Shula or Vince Lombardi or whoever you like but he doesn't have a magic wand and unless he gets (a) a Franchise QB or (b) A Defense with some future hall of famers on it like Pitt, Chi, or Baltimore then he ain;t going to have us going 12-4 every year.

Does anyone seriously think that if we got Phillip Rivers tomorrow or Aaron Rodgers that it wouldn't solve 95% of our problems instantly with or without Sparano?

Harbaugh turned a horrible San Diego State team into 2 time conference champions. Then he came into Stanford and took them from nothing to a powerhouse team (as we witnessed last night). Can he do the same in the NFL? Guess we'll have to see.

Sabans downfall was as a GM not an XsOs coach. Culpepper over Brees.

Harbaugh played in the NFL for many years. He set foot on a pro football field, went through pro practices, knows how pro players act & react. He was a starter & backup with several teams so he knows many offenses. He had a pro assistant coaching stint (QB coach I think) for a year or two with the raiders & during that time I think they O was pretty productive. He turned around a bad team. He helped develop a top notch college QB. His Stanford O is a pro O.
This sets him apart from the Saban's & company IMO.

okay...this is starting to sound okay. but i need more to be convinced.

Go Fins!

His resume sounds a lot like Steve Spurrier to me.

Harbaugh doesnt come off as a college coach. He was an NFL QB for a long time. He runs a pro-style offense in college. The thing I would like most about the hire is that it would get us a better chance at getting Luck and giving Luck a seemless transition into the NFL. Luck wouldn't have to learn a new offense. He could be inserted as a starter year one.

If we get Harbaugh, I would be ok with the Dolphins giving up their ENTIRE draft for Luck.

Steve Spurrier has ZERO work ethic... Harbaugh doesnt strike me as that type.

If you watched you last night's game you wouldn't be asking this question. An aggressive, non-stop, pedal to the metal, attacking 3-4 defense. An offense that featured a lot of shifts, motions, and movement to create favorable matchups. An offensive philosphy that constantly goes for the jugular damn near until the final whistle. What's not to like about Jim Harbaugh?

Right city, wrong college. He was the coach at the University of San Diego. You are correct that he turned a perrenial doormat DII program into a second place finish in his first year, then winding up as the two time Pioneer League champions in his final two years as head coach.

What makes Tony Sparano a good NFL coaching prospect?

The better question is, What makes him a bad one? Answer: banked on the wrong QB, like Saban, like Wanny, etc. Give Brady or Manning to any of those guys, and suddenly, they're brilliant. Belichek is good, but he was nobody before Brady. (And BTW, if he's so brilliant, why wasn't Brady starting ahead of Bledsoe before Drew went down?)

Give the top QB in college to a coach, and suddenly, he's a rock star!! I just wonder if everyone would be salivating over Harbaugh if he hadn't had Luck as his QB?
