When the Fins kept Wanny and hired Spielman as GM, I got LIVID (like many of you guys). When they faltered, I got depressed because the "I told you so" syndrome set in...So I decided to write Randy Muller who was with ESPN Insider at the time. The following is his copied and pasted email response to me. Notice the indirect swipe he took at Spielman when discussing the need to hire a "real" GM. I really appreciated the candor with which he responded.
Hey Steve, I won't answer this one in the mailbag but your right about
the decision making of the upper food chain....Their indecision has
carried over onto the field...I think only a total shakeup will change
things at this point...I know and like Eddie alot but I think he's going
to retire sometime soon...they have rumored to be going to make Brian
Weidmeyer(their cap guy) their President for the last couple of
years...but it hasn't happened yet...I think Brian would hire the right football
guy(a real GM) to run the team...This team has totally lost focus and
there is really no reason to wait for the end of the season to make
changes....give the new guy a change to evaluate this year and your that
much further ahead when the off-season starts....just some
thoughts....thanks for the note...RM

message = Hi Randy,
Would it be fair to blame (team president) Eddie Jones and (owner)
Wayne Huzienga for the horrible collapse of the Dolphins? Alot of people
are blaming Wanndstedt and Spielman for their terrible personnell
choices, but it is the team president and owner who hired and retained these
guys. I'm afraid that firing and replacing Wanndstedt and Spielman
after the season won't be enough to correct the Dolphins' woes. They need
a change at the top of their food chain because they demonstrated this
year that their decision making skills are awful to say the least.
