Soon Enough

i'm not surprised that jonathon martin has had some issues...i did expect him to fare better though with his feet and ability to move before the pads came on though in minicamp...sounds like he's been a turnstyle...i expected his issues to come to the forefront when the real contact begins in pads...ie lack of strength

what i am surprised about though is that it seems that he's going into camp pegged as the starting right tackle...and i don't think he's ready for it

I would be very surprised to see Martin as the starting RT this year. I believe he will be brought around slowly so that he will be ready when the time comes for Tannehill to take over the team. This team is going to lose some games this year fellas. My hopes are high, because we have some young talented guys at our core, but it's because of that young core that I will have a realistic view on this season.

I think Jonathan Martin will look better in training camp than in the OTA/Mini sessions. When everything's without pads and you have to essentially play strenuous patty-cake, you can end up isolating upper body strength. When you go full-out in pads, that's when you get your lower body more involved, and Martin will benefit from that.

Things I took away from OTA/Mini Camp:

1. Congemi's exactly right about the pace, but it has its benefits and drawbacks. One immediate benefit should be the Dolphins ready to get off to a fast start, especially at home in the heat, as they'll be highly conditioned by fast paced field activity. One immediate drawback could be seeming to run into a wall with several players that just aren't learning things properly because they need a slower pace in order to learn (see: Johnson, Chad).

2. Receivers unit is in trouble, outside of perhaps Brian Hartline, who really didn't participate in many OTAs/Minis due to "personal" surgery (could range anywhere from appendectomy to nut-ectomy). Chad Johnson came in and immediately looked like the alpha of the unit, only one that could impressively get open versus man and consistently catch the ball. That doesn't bode well because we still have zero clue whether Chad is going to learn the playbook, ESPECIALLY considering all of the calls that will be made at the line, and the pace they're trying to set.

3. Speaking of which, this offense is extremely portable. It's like Madden, any given play you can audible any/all of the routes at the line based on what you see in the defense. This has benefits and drawbacks as well. The benefits are obvious. The drawbacks are just as real. If you don't have the right guy making those calls at the line, he can ruin the shape of the offense by audibling too many route combinations that don't make sense, being predictable, etc. It also puts a lot of responsibility on the receivers, tight ends and backs to adjust to everything that is going on. One drawback is I don't expect Ryan Tannehill to make a serious showing in this QB competition, by virtue of the nature of the offense. I don't care if he already knows the name of each play, route, formation, etc. What he has yet to learn is how to call them and run them against NFL defenses, and that's going to take a lot of time.

4. Sean Smith will probably improve. Reshad Jones is looking like he'll improve. I like what I've been hearing about Karlos Dansby at Mike, I think he'll be very aggressive. Not much else you can tell about the defense this early.

5. The following position battles are trending the following directions at the moment: Artis Hicks over John Jerry (RG), Lydon Murtha over Jon Martin (RT), David Garrard over Matt Moore (QB), Legedu Naanee over Clyde Gates (WR4), Charles Clay over Michael Egnew (TE2), Koa Misi over Gary Guyton (SLB), Reshad Jones over Tyrone Culver (RS), Chris Clemons over Jimmy Wilson (LS).

If he´s named the starter ahead of Murtha Game 1, there are some irresponsible people running this team...Good thing is, he´s NOT a 1st round pick, therefore there is no direct pressure on playing him right away!!!

Martin will need to get stronger for sure. Remember he did play left tackle at Stanford and kept Luck off his butt for the most part.In his interview he seems like a very intelligent guy (Stanford grad) so i'm sure he knows this and will work on it.
The good news is Big jake and Richie live in the weight room and should show him how it's done. I'd be supprised if he's not starting by the mid season at least.

Good stuff CK Thanks for the input.

Martin will not be able to gain enough strength to effectively take over the starting right tackle position this year. If he does start, it will be because Murtha is playing like a mother and doing his imitation of Colombu.

i'm hoping murtha wins that job...martin needs a year if possible to work on his strength primarily...ideally he's a 3rd tackle in jumbo sets and short yardage type stuff this year...murthas not great but i think he's more ready at this stage

and another thing i don't like is hicks beating out jerry...hicks has never shown me anything other than he's a journeyman in this league...so if thats the case i don't like jerrys figuring things out

Hicks is a guy you don't want to play at tackle and I was disappointed that when he first got here, that's what they had in mind for him. It's just not a good idea and it doesn't give me great feelings about whoever is in charge of those personnel decisions, and the way they evaluate.

But at guard I have no issues with him starting. The last time he played guard, he was a lot better than people give him credit for being. He was always a pretty good guard in Philly too. He's a consummate veteran and it wouldn't surprise me if he looked like the Dolphins' best guard in 2012.

I'd rather Jon Martin play immediately. I want him getting used to starting at the NFL level right away. It may not be pretty at times, but I doubt Lydon Murtha would be any prettier. Murtha has noted issues in pass protection. Not concerned about OTAs or Mini Camps. I think Martin will do better in Training Camp when he is far less handcuffed in terms of physicality, and is allowed to get his lower body and attitude more involved in his blocks.

Do you guys think Jake Scott (G) is still in play ? Jerry seemed to play better at tackle last season. I don't think he's a starter at either position

has jake scott even played football in the last 2 years...seems like i don't recall him playin in one game even in 2011...

i mean i see what ck says about he'd rather it be martin cause yeah murtha does have his own issues...but i think martin is gonna get a SERIOUS wake up call when he faces the strength he's gonna face in games if he's starting week 1...i could see him on his *** a lot

I'm concerned about Martin's footwork playing on the right side. I know that was actually a strength of his at Stanford, but having to basically mirror every move you made over the last 4 years may not come quickly or easily for him. I totally agree that reps are the key, but not if it's going to get someone (the QB) killed...
