With the current news of him working hard after practice, what kind of a role will Manuel Wright play on our defense.

A big role!! I see him coming in the game early and letting Truck rest for the end of the game stretch. I see us rotating out a lot of d linemen this year. Maybe up to 8.

you think he could be a starter this year?

He will most likely be used as the pass rushing DT on the line and used on 3rd and long situations. He will be able to surge the line and not only score some sacks but open up the line for other players. If he progresses he could very well become our NT of the future. Hopefully....

It all depends on how hard he wants to work. The fact that he showed up to camp in worse shape than he finished last year helps, but he's made up a lot of lost ground. He's been busting his butt the last few weeks to make up ground so that's a good sign. In a perfect situation, Manny is a 3-4 DE with the flexibility to play NT or 4-3 DT. He's an NT for now because he showed up overweight and because Traylor has no one but a rookie FA and 7th rounder behind him (and Zgonina who's a last resort option).

Saban, June 11, PC;
On if Jeff Zgonina is playing more defensive end) – “He’s playing exactly like he played last year - he played both last year. It probably appears that way in practice only because between Frederick Evans and Manny Wright, we’re trying to give those two guys the majority of the work at nose to see if we can develop a young nose that can play nose. Last year, when Keith (Traylor) couldn’t play at the end of the season, we had two noses, but none of our young guys knew how to play nose. We played Manny in there – and he did a good job – but it was a tough adjustment for him. What we’re trying to do now, regardless of where they end up on the front because Manny is still a defensive end for us and still practices at that position, we want to have one guy ready in an emergency situation. Jeff needs some work in there, but he’s a very experienced player so I don’t think that he needs to do it everyday. He played both for us last year and I think that’s the value that he has is his diversity, in terms of the positions that he can play up front.â€Â

no matter, we come out ahead if he can line up in different places. His explosion off the ball makes him dangerous not matter. I would love to have a nose that can collapse the pocket from the middle...that un-nerves qb's.

Wright is probabaly going to end up at pretty much every position on the line that the bigger linemen occupy. If he's got a future as a starter, he's probabaly going to replace Vonnie Holiday as the weakside DT/3-4 DE, as Roth seems like he is apprentice under Kevin Carter.

Saban wants a passing down NT. Saban uses a fair amount of nickel and dime formations with 3-down linemen and a guy over Center. Jeff Zgonina is doing that now, but he's also 300 years old. Wright seems like a good fit because he's bigger then all of our other pass rushing DE/DT types.

we have big expectations for him and hopefully he contribute significantly but right now it looks like it will take some work. Def hope he can become one of our future defensive stars:dolphins:

I think you'll see him in there rotating with both Carter and Traylor. He will be the first reserve of the DT's coming off the bench. I think you'll see a better Wright this year, and a kid in year 3 that will start and could have a very productive career if he can keep the pounds at his momma's house.

i know this is not related to what wrights role this year is but why didnt he start for usc?

Because he had first and second round picks starting ahead of him in Patterson and Cody.

There are a lot of guys who play dline positions, Manny Wright, Kevin Vickerson, Fred Evans, and Jeff Zgognina, who play a variety of line spots.

Traylor and Fafita are strictly NT's and Carter and Roth are strictly DE's either in the 4-3 or 3-4. Holliday is an off side 4-3 DT and a 3-4 DE.

It will be curious to see if Saban asks the first group to specialize or does he use them in a rotation where they play multiple spots.
