Okay, for entertainment purposes, if you were Mularkey what plays would you call for the very first Offensive Series against the Steelers in the opener?

I know sometimes I daydream about playcalling the Phins first possession, so here's how I imagine it looking....

I-Formation - TE, 2 WR
1-10 Ronnie Brown run 4 hole (between RG and RT) - 2 yards

Strong-I
2-8 Playaction to Ronnie to strong side. CPep to Booker on weak side for 12 but incomplete.

Single Back - TE, 3 WR
3-8 Culpepper pumps to Welker on the quick slant, then throws complete to R Mac on the 8 yard out.

I-Form
1-10 ..... you guys can take it from here.

Show me how it's done.

Pittsburgh I think thinks we are gonna run early.. So I'd counter that. Run a play-action pass to start the game and hit Ronnie or McMichael for a screen pass and let their talent get first downs after the catch .. I'd do those kinda plays to set up the run later on

I disagree, I think they'll play Culpepper tough, respect the passing game. The Fins need to surprise and pound Pittsburgh early.

PLaying the pass tough, to me, means either EVEryone is back covering, or blitzes to pressure Culpepper. Either way, the middle of that defense could have a LOT of space for CPep to take off running if that's the case.

Would you want that, though?

I think if we start like that we'll see a running game like we saw against Carolina.. Pitt's strength is stopping the run.. As far as them coming after Culpepper, that's why I am supporting a "quick" passing game to start off the first few plays. I'd also get pep on a roll out or two to buy a little more time and make their D work to go horizontal. Have him pass off a roll out. He is a great passer on the run. We might as well utilize his talent there .

This will soften up Pitt's D to run Ronnie more effectively later on in the 1st quarter and later in the game.. We have a huge offensive line.. So do alot of mis-directions to get their defense running alot early. Get the wind out of them a little. Then use our big huge offensive line to mow em down later in the game running the ball and the Steeler D will be exhausted ..

Keep em off guard at all times I say, and we win

Flee Flicker to Chambers Deep!!! First play for us.:D

"That would be sweet though, if it happened"

Yeah I'd love to see Ronnie shoulder a big load in this game. I think if we can get him 5-7 carries on the first drive that it will set a tone for the whole game. Not to mention that would probably mean we would score. A good balance is necessary in this game to keep their aggressive safties and LBs back and confused instead of allowing them to sneak up on running plays, or blitz heavy on passing downs.

first play: play action pass deep to chambers...catch em off guard

then id do another PA pass, probably mid pass to mcmichael

then id run

run again

pass for a TD

and yes im available to coach ur kids HS team

Which is exactly why the fins should do what I suggested.. Is to run roll-out passes, play action passes, a hitch play here and there and a deep ball after that, to keep their defense honest.. If the fins run Ronnie 1st and 2nd down like you suggest, I don't see how that will keep their aggressive linebackers and safeties back .

The Steelers I think will come out with a run-blitz so we need the plays to counter that.. Remember, the steelers are a very aggressive defense and play aggressive very early. This is how they get the lead in games then run in 2nd halves . I've watched their tendencies .

I would go with a quick passing game to relax their defense then go deep. Quick 3 and 5 step drops for C-pep. No 7 step drops, at least early on.. Then run after that .. I think against this steeler defense, it is imperative to pass to set up the run (and when I say pass I mean Quick passes) .. Especially considering we have a big offensive line where we can mow them down after their tired chasing our short passing game all over the field.. Denver couldn't do that gameplan against Pitt in the AFC title game because Denver has a small offensive line .. We can, especially when we have a QB who is very good in the short quick passing game .

We will be playing weak defensive fronts alot during the season where Ronnie can run on 1st and 2nd down.. But not for this game IMO .. You saw what happened against Carolina with a strong front 7. Culpepper was very successful with the quick short passing game, the run was not so successful.. So I'd do that.

5-7 runs for Ronnie

Okay, we'd all love to see Ronnie power-run all over the Steelers on our first drive, but as the OC what plays do you call if he's getting stuffed and we keep ending up in 3rd and long?

Seeing as how several people have said "start by surprising them with a PA pass deep to Chambers" I don't think the Steelers braintrust will be very surprised to see that call. If we've all thought of it, God knows they have too.

Like the idea still though. :D :D :D

I would defrinitely agree with your firset post, which was to stretch them HORIZONTALLY first, running them sideline to sideline on hitches, screens, rollouts, tosses (maybe not the latter, as their D swarms to the ball too well), and some playaction as well. Then a mid range passing game and one or two shots over the top (only one has to connect) and they'll be all spread wide open for Ronnie to run right up their crack.

You know what I mean.

....or we could take the kickoff return straight to the house.

Since according to some people here we're going to beat Pittsburgh by two TDs EASILY, I'd call three kneel downs - just to take time off the clock.
